The lid comprises in the edge (6) a elastically deformable engaging element with a slot (10) and a vertical engaging lip (8) or engaging edge (12). In a closed position a top part (8a, 12a) of the lip (8) or engaging edge (12), engaged a bottom side (3a) of the protruding edge or flange (3). The protruding edge of flange (3) extends at least partially in the slot (10). The elastically deformable element is elastically deformable for disengaging the engaging lip (8) or engaging edge (12).

Description

THERMOFORMED CONTAINER WITH LOCKABLE LID BACKGROUND
5 The invention relates to the field of thermoformed deformable plastic containers comprising a bottom piece and a lid. Disclosed is a quick disconnect locking mechanism for interlocking the lid and the bottom piece of such a container, whereby the locking mechanism prevents unintentional disconnection of the lid from the bottom piece for example during transportation of the container.
10
Two piece thermoformed deformable plastic containers for packaging of for example fruit or vegetables, consisting of a bottom piece and a lid have been around for many years. In general, these containers are manufactured from clear thermoplastic sheet materials. So far, these containers have a lid with a tapered edge that can be pressed 15 onto the top edge of the bottom piece which results in a clamping connection between the lid and the bottom piece. Since the existing containers of this type in general don’t have secure locking means for the lid it happens frequently that the lid comes off when a person squeezes one or more side walls of the bottom piece of the container. Whether this actually happens also depends on factors such as the thickness of the sheet material 20 from which the container is made, the size and the shape of the container and the rigidity of the top edge of the bottom piece. If this edge is a flanged edge with a relatively wide flange the edge will be stiff and not readily deformable. However in case of a narrow edge and very thin sheet material a container filled with for example fruit may already deform significantly when someone picks it up by putting some force on 25 two side walls opposite to each other. If the lid is released due to this, it may result in the fruit or other food items that are packed in the container to fall from the container and become damaged which of course is not desirable. Some fruit or vegetable producers or retailers sometimes even opt for the solution of stapling or taping the bottom piece and the lid of the containers to each other which requires an extra action.
30 Although this prevents the abovementioned problem the opening of such a container is often experienced as cumbersome by consumers. In addition, a container with a bottom piece and a lid that have been stapled to each other is usually damaged heavily during 10 4 0 020 2 opening and will not be resealable. A container according to the prior art has a form of a locking mechanism involving a hole in the bottom piece and a locking element that engages with this hole. However, this locking method hampers the process of filling and closing containers in an automated step.
5 The market clearly needs a thermoformed two piece container with a secured lid that nevertheless can be closed and opened easily and that can be filled and closed automatically.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
10
Therefore, the invention aims at providing a thermoformed two piece container having a quick connect and disconnect locking mechanism for interlocking the lid and the bottom piece of the container allowing automated filling and closing of the container.
A thermoformed two piece container is disclosed, comprising a bottom piece or holder 15 for holding one or more products, for example, fruit or vegetable items, and a lid having a locking mechanism able to securely hold at least one edge of the bottom piece.
While the two piece thermoformed containers according to the prior art generally rely on a clamping force between the inner surface of the tapered edge of the lid and the outwardly protruding flanged top edge of the bottom piece of the container the two 20 piece container according to the invention and particularly the lid pertaining to this container comprises a locking mechanism that does not rely on a clamping connection. The lid comprises at least one, preferably elastically, deformable engaging element, also referred to as locking element, that is structured to engage the lower edge of the outwardly protruding flanged edge of the bottom piece of the container. In an 25 embodiment the locking element comprises a corrugated or folded section that allows the element to be expanded elastically without exerting too much force on the adjacent edges and without damaging the locking element of the lid due to (excessive) plastic deformation.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the 30 detailed description below and the pertaining drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
30 In the drawings the same reference number refers to the same feature.
FIG. 1 shows a simplified schematic cross section of the walls of a part of an embodiment of a closed two piece container comprising a bottom piece, also referred to 4 as a holder, with a base 1 and a side wall 2 with a flange 3 at the top edge of the side wall. In the embodiment shown schematically in FIG. 1 the flange (3) comprises a profiled cross sectional shape. The invention also envisages that the flange can have a flat shape.
5 In addition, the cross section shows a part of the lid of the container comprising a top face 4, a side wall 5 and an, in this schematically shown embodiment outwardly inclined, edge section 6 with a small flared edge or flange 7. Instead of the staggered position of the edge section 6 relative to the side wall 5, the lid can also have a shape where the edge section 6 is a direct extension of the side wall 5.
10 Please note that this schematic drawing is not intended to exactly depict the actual situation. It is a non-limiting example. For example, in this drawing there is a visible clearance between the top edge of the bottom piece and the inner surface of the outwardly inclined edge of the lid, i.e. there is no visualization of a clamping connection between the bottom piece and the lid.
15 FIG. 2a shows a schematic cross section of a part of the bottom piece and the lid of an embodiment of a container according to the invention with an engaging or locking mechanism. For the sake of simplicity only the sectioned areas of the lid have been shaded. Some parts of the container have been provided with feature reference numbers corresponding to the reference numbers used in the cross sectional schematic drawing 20 shown in FIG. 1. The embodiment of the engaging mechanism schematically shown in FIG. 2a comprises an engaging lip 8 that is structured to engage the bottom side 9 of the flange 3 that is situated at the top edge of the side wall of the bottom piece of the container. The lip 8 is created by making a shaped slot in the edge section 6 of the lid. This is illustrated by the fact that the lip is shaded to show that it is a cross sectional 25 view of the lip while a side 6a of the slot is not shaded, since it is not a cross section. FIG. 2b shows a cross section of a part of another embodiment of the bottom piece and the lid of a container according to the invention whereby the lid is configured to have a closer fit with the bottom piece and hence the lip of the locking mechanism is almost straight in this locked position of the lid, whereas in the embodiment shown in FIG. 2a 30 the lip is in a (preferably but not necessarily elastically) deformed state. Elastic stresses in the lip in the state shown in FIG. 2a can contribute to a tighter connection between the lid and the bottom piece then an embodiment wherein the locking lip is in a non- 5 deformed state when the container is closed. In the discussion of FIG. 3 an option other then sideways bending of the lip 8 with the resulting elastic stress will be discussed as a method to achieve a tight connection between the bottom piece and the lid of a container.
5 FIG. 3 gives a better understanding of the lip configuration by showing a side view of an embodiment of the lid with such a locking mechanism. It shows the slot 10 (in this case a slot with an approximate shape of eyeglasses) that is created in the edge section 6 of the lid resulting in the formation of an engaging element 11 with an engaging lip 8. The shape and relative dimensions of the slot and the lip 8 shown in FIG. 2a and 2b and 10 in FIG. 3 and any possible other drawing in this document only serve as examples and are intended to be non-limiting. When this description or the claims refer to the slot 10 in the edge section 6 of the lid the slot 10 can also extend into the wall section 5.
By increasing the height of the lip 8 a tighter closure between the lid and the bottom piece of the container can be achieved since the lip that engages with the bottom surface 15 9 of the flanged edge will then press the lid more firmly onto the top side of the flange 3 of the bottom piece of the container.
Depending on for example the extent of the offset (staggering) between the side wall 5 and the edge section 6 of the lid and on the size and position of the slot 10 a part of the flange 3 at the top edge of the wall of the bottom piece of the container can protrude 20 (partially) through the slot 10 when the lid is placed on the bottom piece in order to close the container.
FIG. 4a shows a top view of a truncated comer of the bottom piece of an embodiment of the container. The dotted line 12 schematically represents the position of the top edge or engaging edge of the engaging element of the lid underneath the flange 3 at the top edge 25 of the wall of the bottom piece of the container when the lid is locked on the bottom piece. In this case the engaging element is almost straight.
FIG. 4b shows a top view of a truncated comer of the bottom piece of an embodiment of the container. The dotted line 12 represents the position of the engaging edge, also referred to as top edge, of the engaging element 11 of the lid which engaging element in 30 this case is inwardly (towards the center of the lid) bent. This inwardly bent shape of the engaging element 11 will hereinafter also be referred to as concave. In this embodiment the bend can be the result of a pre-shaped condition of the engaging element.
6
The straight version of the engaging element as schematically shown in FIG. 4a will most probably be easier to pull from underneath the flange at the top edge of the bottom piece of the container. In principle, it will be more difficult to open a container with a lid with the pre-shaped, inwardly bent engaging element than to open a container with a 5 lid with a straight engaging element.
Of course, a comer of the container according to the invention can have any shape and is not limited to a truncated shape as shown in FIG. 4a and FIG. 4b.
10 FIG. 5 shows a schematic side view of a truncated corner of the bottom piece of an embodiment of the container whereby a locking mechanism is positioned in this truncated comer of the lid. In an embodiment the lid of the container according to the present invention comprising four truncated comers has an engaging mechanism in each of these four truncated corners. According to the invention a container can have any 15 number of engaging elements that is deemed useful and/or practical and these engaging elements can be positioned in any useful and/or practical location on the lid of the container.
In the embodiment of the engaging mechanism shown in FIG. 5 the engaging element does not comprise a clear engaging lip but an engaging edge 12 with two notches or 20 recesses 13 which are meant to engage with the edge of the flanged edge of the bottom piece of the container at the two positions where the engaging element and the flanged edge intersect.
FIG. 6 shows a schematic side view of a truncated comer of the bottom piece of an embodiment of the container with an engaging element positioned in this truncated 25 comer of the lid and whereby the engaging element comprises an expansion section 14. In this embodiment the expansion section comprises a corrugated section 14, also referred to as a harmonica section. In this context corrugated can mean any configuration designed to allow easy expansion when a pulling force is applied perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the corrugations. The corrugations can 30 have any useful or desirable shape such as for example the shape of sharp folds or more rounded shapes. The expansion section can also comprise a decorative relief that is 7 present in the engaging element that allows expansion of the element without requiring (significant) plastic deformation.
FIG. 7 shows a schematic top view of an engaging element with a corrugated expansion section comprising sharp folds.
5 If for example an embodiment of the engaging element is used that is pre-shaped and/or pre-stressed in an inwardly bent fashion as shown in FIG. 5b the presence of an expansion section in the engaging element will facilitate pulling the engaging element outwards in order to open the lid of a container while in the locked condition the inwardly bent shape assures proper locking of the lid on the bottom piece of the 10 container. The invention envisages that the engaging element of a lid of a container according to the invention can also comprise more than one corrugated section.
FIG. 8 shows a perspective top view of a closed two piece container according to the invention comprising a bottom piece and a lid. This embodiment of the container comprises the locking mechanism according to the invention positioned in the visible 15 truncated comer.
FIG. 9 shows a perspective bottom view of a closed two piece container according to the invention comprising a bottom piece and a lid.
FIG. 10 shows a perspective top view of an embodiment of the bottom piece or holder of a two piece container according to the invention.
20 FIG. 11 is a perspective top view of an embodiment of the lid of the container according to the invention. As visible in the drawing the lid comprises a slot 10 and an engaging element 11, whereby the engaging element comprises several folds and/or corrugations that, in this embodiment, not only serve the purpose of allowing expansion of the engaging element but also serve an aesthetic purpose. Contrary to the position of the 25 slot 10 in the other, more schematic, drawings the slot in the lid shown in FIG. 11 is positioned mainly in the ridge 15 between the side wall 5 and the edge section 6 of the lid. In the claims each or any combination of these parts 5, 6 and 15 of the lid may be referred to as the edge. The invention also comprises embodiments of the lid that have one, in essence, continuous side wall/edge section, instead of a staggered edge.
All examples given in this descriptive section are intended to be non-limiting, and are provided in order to help in conveying the scope of the invention.
