Description

A bag for heating food
The present invention relates to a bag for heating food, said bag being flexible and comprising a 5 a first wall section and a second wall section; a first opening for introducing food; the second wall section being designed for providing a second opening.
On the market a heatable food package is sold under the name Qbag. It is an aluminium bag having two wall sections, said aluminium bag 10 made of a folded sheet of aluminium foil sealed at two edges to define a first opening for introducing food. One of the two wall sections comprises a second opening covered with a transparent label, the label being provided with a tab. For use, food is introduced into the bag and at the side of the first opening the aluminium is rolled up or folded 15 so as to close the bag. The bag will then be placed onto a grill or barbecue, with the wall section comprising the second opening up. The food will be cooked and effectively be steamed. After a while the second wall section may be opened to provide the second opening by using the tab to remove the label partly or in full. Steam will be 20 released through said second opening and the food will become dryer and can reach higher temperatures, as a result of which particular desirable flavours will develop. The cooked food may be consumed via the completely opened second opening.
A disadvantage of the known bag is that it is rather expensive to 25 produce.
The object of the present invention is to provide a bag according to the preamble having reduced cost.
To this end, a bag according to the preamble is characterized in that the bag is made of a heat-resistant material and the second wall 30 section - comprises a vent opening; and - is capable of being torn, the second wall section being locally weakened along a path, said path defining - the second opening when the material of the second wall section 35 is torn along said path, - a tongue when the material of the second wall section is partially torn along said path.
This allows avoidance of a label for closing off the second 1039523 2 opening in the second wall section. The local weakening is achieved by a relatively reduced thickness of the material of the second wall section, by perforations or a combination thereof. The perforations may be in the form of a row of slits. A reduced thickness is for example 5 achieved by pressing. In case of a second wall section of aluminium, the reduced thickness of the path is for example less than 12 pm, such as 4 to 8 pm. The path may be a closed path, in which case a subsection of the second wall section can be removed. While the present invention does not provide a transparent window, the contents is visible during 10 the second stage of cooking where the second opening has been made by tearing the wall of the second wall section. This phase, is more important because it is the last stage of the cooking and because of higher temperatures during this stage. A suitable material is for example a metal film (e.g. thin tin sheet) or PTFE coated glass fiber. 15 Such a bag may be used in an oven to cook food, such as poultry. In a second phase of cooking the second opening allows the grill and/or hot air to be used to form a crust.
US2008251518 discloses a heatable food package comprising a label for defining a vent opening. The vent opening serves to prevent the 20 building up of excessive pressure, which could lead to violent rupture of the package or sudden release of hot steam which could hurt the cook.
According to a favourable embodiment, the second wall section is made of aluminium.
25 This material has both good heat characteristics and can be torn.
According to a favourable embodiment, the first wall section is made of aluminium.
This provides the bottom of the bag with an excellent heat conductor. It is preferred if both the first and the second wall 30 section are made of aluminium as this results in a multi-purpose bag for use in an oven and/or with an open flamem, such as from a barbecue, a campfire, a hearth etc. Also, in contrast to a QBag it may be used on a barbecue with the lid of the barbecue closed as there is no label that can melt.
35 According to a favourable embodiment, the path is not closed.
Thus the path will define a tongue of material of the second wall section. If desired, the tongue can be folded back if it is desired to partially shut the second opening again. The end points of the path 3 will preferably be at least 2 cm apart, such as at least 4 cm apart.
According to a favourable embodiment, the path defines a tab.
The tab makes it easier to make the second opening available by tearing the material of the second wall section along the path.
5 According to a favourable embodiment, a wall section of the bag comprises a pleat running from a first end of the bag comprising the first opening to a second end of the bag opposite of said first opening.
This allows the bag to bulge out more easily to accommodate for 10 the food. If only the second wall section comprises the pleat, the first wall section may remain relatively flat, helping to cook the food inside the bag more evenly.
According to a favourable embodiment, the path defines a tab and the pleat runs through said tab.
15 This makes it much easier to grab the tab, which is important as the bag is hot.
According to a favourable embodiment, the bag is a rectangular bag .
Such an bag can be easily and cheaply manufactured from foil, such 20 as aluminium foil.
According to a favourable embodiment, the wall sections have a thickness between 10 and 100 pm.
Such a bag has excellent strength properties for use in cooking.
According to a favourable embodiment, the thickness of the second 25 wall section having the second opening is thinner than the first wall section .
This results in the wall sections having a different stiffness which comes with several advantages. The first wall section may remain relatively flat, helping to cook the food inside the bag more evenly.
30 It is easier to eat from because the bottom, i.e. the first wall section, will maintain its shape better. Such a bag is easy to manufacture using two sheets of foil such as aluminium foil that are sealed at the sides (e.g. by ultrasonic welding) and with a seal extending from one side to the other, and cutting the sheets to form 35 the first opening. The first wall section of aluminium has a thickness between 10 and 100 pm (preferably between 12 and 25 pm, such as 18 pm), whereas the second wall section of aluminium has a thickness between 4 and 50 pm (preferably between 10 and 15 pm, such as 13 pm).
4
According to a favourable embodiment, the path comprises a first straight or curved elongated location that is relatively closer to the distal end of the tongue points to a section of a second adjacent straight or curved elongated location, said section of that second 5 straight or curved elongated location being at a distance to both ends of said second straight or curved elongated location, one of the ends of said second straight or curved elongated location being closer to the distal end of the tongue.
This helps to ensure that when the second opening is created, the 10 risk that there is a deviation from the path is reduced.
The present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the drawing where
Fig. la a top view of an empty bag;
Fig. lb a cross-sectional view through a closed bag containing 15 food;
Fig. 1c a front view of an empty bag;
Fig. 2 a front view of an empty alternative bag;
Fig. 3 show a frontal view of an alternative bag; and
Fig. 4 a to c show three path sections.
20 Fig. la shows a bag 100 which has a rectangular shape. In the embodiment discussed here, the bag 100 is made of two superimposed sheets of aluminium (Fig. lb and Fig. lc) that make up a first wall section 101 and a second wall section 102. At edges 103 of the bag 100, the first wall section 101 and the second wall section 102 have seals 25 104 that were formed by ultrasonic welding. The seals 104 extend over the length and width of the bag 100. At one edge there is a first opening 111 (see Fig. lc) for introducing food 115.
The second wall section 102 is locally weakened along a path 120, in this case a row of perforations. Each of the perforations can serve 30 as a vent opening 121. The path 120 also defines a tab 122, which in the embodiment discussed here defined by a long, curved slit 123 through the aluminium of the second wall section 102. This long curved slit 123 can also serve as a vent opening 121. The tab 122 will make it easier to open a closed bag 100. The path 120 defines the location of a 35 second opening 112, that will form when the tab 122 is pulled and the aluminium of the second wall section 102, which will occur along the path 120.
The distal end of the tongue 124, in particular the tab 122 may 5 comprise a hole 130. A tool such as a fork may be used to pull the tab 122 and create the second opening 112. To avoid tearing said hole 130, the path 120 may comprise both perforations and reduced thickness between the perforations. The hole 130 may serve as a vent opening 121.
5 Fig. lb shows a cross-sectional view of the bag 100. The first opening 111 has been closed by rolling up or folding the sandwich of the first wall section 101 and the second wall section 102 after introducing food 115.
During or after cooking the food 115 in the closed bag 100, the 10 second opening 112 is created by pulling the tab 122. This allows more water vapour to escape during cooking, and/or allows access to the food 115 when done for eating it.
During cooking, the second opening 112 does not have to be created along the full length of the path 120. It may be created to only a 15 small extend, to allow inspection of the food 115 during cooking and/or to facilitate the release of water vapour from the food 115 during cooking. The part of the second wall section enclosed by the path 120 which is not a closed path 120, defines a tongue 124 and if necessary it can be folded back onto the food 115 if cooking requires this or 20 after the cooking is done to keep the food warm for a bit longer.
Fig. lc shows a front view of the bag 100 in a nearly flat state to indicate the first opening 111.
Fig. 2 shows a front view of an alternative embodiment of the bag 100 in a nearly flat state to indicate the first opening 111.
25 The alternative bag 100 has two special features, which will be discussed below, but other alternative bags 100 may have only one of these two special features.
In the embodiment shown here, the wall thickness of the first wall section 101 is thicker than the wall thickness of the second wall 30 section 102. The increased thickness means that a bag 100 filled with food 115 will more easily maintain its shape, especially after the second opening 112 has been created. This makes it more comfortable to eat the food as it isn't as readily damaged. As a result the risk of leakage of hot liquids is reduced.
35 In the embodiment shown here, the bag 100 has a pleat 230. This allows the bag 100 to expand in volume more easily when the bag 100 is filled with food via the first opening 111.
The crest 231 of the pleat 230 runs through the tab 122, making 6 the tab 122 easier to get hold onto, facilitating the creation of the second opening 112.
Fig. 3 shows a front view of an alternative bag 100 comprising pleats 230 at the longitudinal edges 103 of the alternative bag 100.
5 This bag 100 can be easily filled with a relatively large amount of food.
Fig. 4a to 4c show three sections of paths 120, designed to reduce the risk of the material of the second wall section 102 to deviate from the path 120 when the second opening 112 is formed. In the figures, the 10 tab 122 will be at the top. The path 120 comprises of a series of straight or curved elongated locations that are either weakened (reduced material thickness) or perforations (or combinations thereof). The locations are interrupted by locations that have a relatively larger thickness. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, a first 15 straight or curved elongated location 401 that is relatively closer to the distal end of the tongue 124 points to a second adjacent straight or curved elongated location 402, and more precisely it points to a section of that second straight or curved elongated location 402 at a distance to both ends of said second straight or curved elongated 20 location 402. The distance between the end of the first straight or curved elongated location 401 to the second straight or curved elongated location 402 is preferably less than the contour length of the smallest of the two adjacent sections, such as 0.5 times the length, more preferably 0.25 times said length.
25 The invention may be varied within the scope of the appended claims. For example, a bag with wall sections that have equal thickness may be manufactured by folding a sheet of aluminium, in which case seals have to be provided over a reduced length.
