The present invention relates to an ironing board cover comprising at least three layers, i.e. successively a top layer, an intermediate layer and a carrier layer, wherein the intermediate layer is made of a metal foil. The present invention also relates to a method for manufacturing such an ironing board cover as well as to a method for ironing fabric using the present ironing board cover.

This patent deviates from the patent originally granted.

The present invention relates to an ironing board cover, comprising successively a top layer, an intermediate layer and a carrier layer. The present invention furthermore relates to a method for manufacturing such an ironing board cover, as well as to a method for ironing fabric

An ironing board cover is known from Dutch patent NL 1022534, also in the name of Widemex Geldrop B.V. The object of this known patent specification is to provide the cover with one or more materials to reduce the friction between the fabric to be ironed and the heating element. Similar ironing board covers are known from EP-A-0 378 229 and British patent specification 1,091,110.

From the name of Widemex Geldrop B.V. Granted Dutch patent NL 1004242 is furthermore known as an ironing board cover, which ironing board cover consists of a fabric applied to a foam layer, wherein an odor substance is provided in the foam layer. According to such a construction, the desired transfer of certain fragrances, such as blossom scent, can be carried out without the need for an addition of fragrances to water often added to an iron. Such a fragrance is released in the desired concentration when the ironing operation is carried out at an elevated temperature of the heater.

Ironing board covers are also known from US patent publications US 2,214,824, US 2741,045, US 4,043,062, US 6,349,490, US 2,278,517, US 2,947,098, US 2,968,107, the British patent publication GB 746 627 and the Swiss patent publication CH 411 771.

A drawback of the known ironing board covers is that they function less well when used with the modern irons with steam system which ensure a large and continuous steam supply. For example, conventional ironing board covers will allow steam to pass, which can cause leakage and thus the formation of puddles on the floor below the ironing board, which is undesirable.

The object of the present invention is thus to provide an ironing board cover that prevents leakage and thus to prevent the formation of puddles on the ironing board.

A further object of the invention is to provide an ironing board cover that gives good heat distribution over the hot ironing surface.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an ironing board cover that is particularly suitable for use with power irons and steam systems.

The ironing board cover according to the present invention successively comprises a top layer, an intermediate layer and a carrier layer, which intermediate layer is aluminum foil, wherein one or more additional intermediate layers are present between the top layer and the aluminum foil and / or between the aluminum foil and the carrier layer, wherein a molton layer is present between the top layer and the aluminum foil, and a foam layer is present between the top layer and the molton layer, the carrier layer being a foam layer and the top layer being made of a cotton fabric. The present invention therefore relates to an ironing board cover, comprising successively a foam layer, a layer of aluminum foil, a molton layer, a foam layer and a layer of cotton fabric.

Using such a metal foil, a barrier layer is formed for steam and water. This barrier layer has a dual function. Firstly, the steam that is sent through the top layer and any intermediate layers during the ironing is retained by the metal foil and is reflected as it were. This creates an air cushion and the fabric to be ironed is provided with steam from two sides, i.e. the top 20 and bottom. As a result, the ironing results are better and the ironing time can be shortened.

The metal foil is an aluminum foil. The present inventor has thus obtained the best results.

Furthermore, one or more additional intermediate layers are present between the top layer and the metal foil and / or between the metal foil and the carrier layer, wherein the one or more intermediate layers are selected from layers made of molton, cotton fabric, foam or metal foil. These additional intermediate layers provide a soft and flexible surface for ironing. The additional intermediate layers are placed between the top layer and the metal foil. Preferably, only one metal foil is present.

A molton layer is present between the top layer and the metal foil. Such a molton layer has a damping effect and prevents the formation of wrinkles during ironing by providing a soft surface. The molton layer is also well permeable to steam and moisture, whereby the favorable effect of the present invention is retained. A foam layer is present between the top layer and the molton layer. The carrier layer is a foam layer.

The present ironing board cover consists of five layers, successively a decorative top layer, namely a cotton fabric, a first foam layer, a molton layer, an aluminum foil and a second foam layer. Particularly preferred is the above embodiment wherein the top layer, the first foam layer and the molton layer are bonded to each other adhering over substantially the entire surface. Furthermore, it is particularly preferred that the metal foil and the carrier layer are bonded to each other adhering substantially over the entire surface. For a good "air cushion effect" it is preferable that the metal foil is not adhered to the layer directly above (being the top layer or an intermediate layer); it is preferable that the metal foil and the layer above it are preferably joined together only at the peripheral edge, for example by sewing.

The present invention further relates to a method for manufacturing an ironing board cover, the method comprising the steps of providing an assembly of the aforementioned five layers, then cutting the assembly into separate ironing board covers to the desired size and then applying them to attach the individual layers to each other.

It is possible to provide the assembly as separate layers that are joined together only after being cut to size. It is also possible that one or more layers of the assembly are mutually bonded prior to cutting to size. For example, by adhesive or by topstitching the layers.

In one embodiment of the method, the carrier layer and the metal foil are bonded together before cutting the assembly to the desired size and the top layer is connected to the carrier layer and the metal foil after cutting the assembly to the desired size.

In another embodiment, the top layer is adhered adhesively to a foam layer and a molton layer successively before cutting the assembly to the desired size and wherein the top layer, the foam layer and the molton layer on the one hand, and the carrier layer and the metal foil on the other hand are joined together such that the molton layer is directed to the metal foil after cutting the assembly to the desired size.

in another embodiment, joining the assembly together comprises sewing the various layers together around the circumference of the ironing board cover, optionally using a tubular holder with an opening through which a tensioning member can be arranged.

in a preferred embodiment the assembly of layers is inseparably provided with a sleeve-shaped holder with an opening through which a tension member, for example a rope, cord or elastic, can be pulled, which ends at an end of the assembly and is provided there with an contraction member to be able to contract the tension member around the ironing board. In this way, the ironing board cover can be suitably arranged around an ironing board. Such an ironing board cover is described, for example, in Dutch patent application NL 10 1035357 in the name of Widemex Geldrop B, V.

The present invention further relates to a method for ironing fabrics, the method comprising the following steps:

i) bringing the heater to the correct temperature, ii) placing the tissue to be ironed on the present ironing board cover as mentioned above, or obtained according to the method described above;

in) slidingly contacting the heated heater with the fabric to be ironed.

Further preferred embodiments for the ironing board cover and the methods are shown in the accompanying claims.

The features listed disclosed appear to be just some of several constructional possibilities from which the skilled person would select, in accordance with circumstances, without the exercise or inventive skill.
