Abstract
Description
Title: Method for packaging products as well as a device intended for use in the method.
The invention relates to a method for packaging products, wherein the products are successively supplied to a packaging station, wherein a continuously moving packaging web is fed into the packaging station, wherein products are placed on the traveling packaging web at an import position wherein the longitudinal edges of the packaging web are continuously folded over during advancement to form a packaging tube in which the products are located, wherein at least one transverse connection is then arranged in each case between two consecutive products in the packaging tube and the packaging tube at this location at least one cross connection is separated to form loose product-containing packages.
The invention also relates to a device for use in such a method, wherein the device comprises a packaging station provided with a packaging web supply for supplying a continuous packaging web, a product input position arranged for placing products there on the continuous packaging web, folding means arranged for advancing, folding the longitudinal edges of the packaging web around the products placed on the packaging web, transverse connection means adapted to form a closure between two successive products located in the packaging tube.
Such a method and device are known from practice and are used, inter alia, in the packaging machines which are put into circulation by the applicant. Usually, upstream of the packaging station, a document composition path is provided which comprises a number of 1 2 1 2 feeders for assembling a mail item to be sent from a number of documents. The composite mail item, which will be referred to hereinafter as the term "product", is supplied to the packaging station by its conveyor at its product input position. In addition, the product is placed on a moving continuous packaging web. The longitudinal edges of this packaging web are folded over by means of folding means and are preferably joined together, for example by means of glue or by means of a sealing operation.
At least one cross connection is then formed in the packaging tube by means of the cross connection means between two successive products. Such a cross connection can for instance be provided by means of a sealing bar which connects an upper layer and a lower layer of the packaging tube. Subsequently, the downstream package can be detached from the packaging tube, for instance by further transporting it at an increased speed, so that the downstream package is pulled away from the packaging tube at the location of the cross connection.
However, it is also possible that after the cross-connection has been formed, the downstream package is cut from the upstream packaging tube by means of a punch or cutting knife to form a loose package with a product contained therein.
A problem with the known method and device is that the products which are placed on the packaging web must be at a certain distance from each other. This distance is necessary to give the packaging web the necessary space during the formation of the cross connection. After all, the thickness of the products must be bridged by the top and bottom layers of the packaging tube to be brought together and, moreover, a certain space is required for the sealing bar itself. In practice, this results in the products being included loosely in the ready 3 packages. This does not improve the appearance of the packaged products. Furthermore, the products housed in loose or spacious packaging are much more difficult to process by automatic stackers and destackers. Another drawback is that more packaging material is consumed than is strictly necessary. In addition, the packaging tube is flattened by the cross-linking means, so that the cross-connection obtained is wider than the width of the rest of the packaged product. In the known device, the cross-connecting means must therefore be considerably wider than the products to be packaged.
The object of the invention is to limit the above-mentioned problem as much as possible and to this end provides a method of the type described in the preamble, which is characterized in that the packaging tube between the two successive products becomes at least slightly transverse. 15 constricted. The invention also provides a device intended for use in the method according to the invention as described in the preamble, which device is characterized by constriction means arranged at the level of the cross connection means, which are arranged for constricting the packaging tube 20 at least in transverse direction before the cross connection means into force.
As a result of the constriction of the packaging tube in the transverse direction, a little more space is created in the height direction in the packaging tube in order to bridge the height of the products to be packed when the cross connection is formed. As a result, a good cross connection can be formed, while the space between the successive products on the packaging web can be smaller. The result of the constriction is that the products are included in the final packaging with less space, so that the appearance of the packaged product looks tighter and more professional. This also offers the advantage that the loosely packaged products obtained in the end are easier to handle in automated subsequent processes, such as for instance stacking and destacking processes. Another advantage is that relatively thick products can be processed with cross-linking means, the length of the sealing bars of which need not be, if at all, greater than the width of the products.
Hierdoor zullen de boven en onderlaag van de verpakkingskoker elkaar snel ontmoeten, zelfs wanneer slechts zeer weinig tussenruimte 20 tussen de producten aanwezig is.According to a further elaboration of the method, the constriction takes place by creating an underpressure in the packaging tube at the position where the cross connection is formed. For this purpose, the device can, according to a further elaboration, be provided with a suction mouth 10 which is in use in the packaging tube near and upstream of the cross-connecting means, the suction mouth being connected to a suction pipe connected to an underpressure source, the suction pipe extending from the squeegee extends upstream to a position where the packaging web has not yet closed to form a packaging tube. By creating an underpressure at the location of the cross-connecting means in the packaging tube, the packaging tube is drawn there in all directions, so that the packaging tube is constricted. As a result, the top and bottom layers of the packaging tube will meet quickly, even if there is only very little space between the products.
.According to an alternative further elaboration of the method, the constriction can take place by exerting pressure on the packaging tube on the outside of the packaging tube, such that the packaging tube obtains a slightly smaller width at the position where the cross connection 25 is formed. This pressure can be applied, for example, by at least two compressed air streams blown through nozzles disposed on either side of the packaging tube in opposite directions to the longitudinal edges of the packaging tube. According to an alternative elaboration, the constriction can take place with the aid of n ✓ · * “; * \. .
For this purpose, such constriction elements are arranged transversely of one another and movable towards each other.
According to a further elaboration of the invention, it is preferable that the two successive products are moved towards each other slightly before forming the cross connections in the transverse direction. Because the two consecutive products are moved slightly towards each other before the transverse connection is formed, some clearance is created in the part of the packaging tube that is situated between the two consecutive products, so that the gap between the consecutive products can also be smaller as a result of this. . The successive products can move towards each other, for example, in the manner as discussed in EP-B-0 689 994. However, other means, such as, for example, a stop that slows down the leading product, can also be used to reduce the space between the successive products 20 are used.
Preferably, the cross connection means comprise a sealing bar assembly which is provided with a top bar and a bottom bar which are arranged movable from each other and towards each other and which are located above and below the packaging tube, respectively.
The invention will be further elucidated on the basis of an exemplary embodiment.

The products P are supplied from a product assembly conveyor 2 and are placed on a packaging web B of foil material with the aid of a positioning station 3 at the desired position relative to each other. The mutual distance between the products is A. 20 The packaging station 1 is provided with folding means 4, 5, 6 which are clearly shown in figure 2. The foil web B is continuously supplied from below from a roll (not shown). The foil web B is guided over guide means 4 and changes from an upward direction of advancement to a direction of advancement directed in the longitudinal direction 25T. Due to the presence of the guiding means 4 and the guiding rods 5, the position of which is adjustable, the longitudinal edges of the foil web B are gradually folded around the products P during advancement. The pulling belts 6 ensure that this folding process is energized. The folding means are therefore formed by the guiding means 4, the guiding rods 5 and the pulling belts 6.

Een en ander is 20 beschreven in aanvraagsters Europese octrooiaanvrage EP-B-0 689 994.Preferably, a longitudinal seal is formed by means of a sealing device 7, which is shown in the top view of figure 2. The two longitudinal edges of the packaging web B are hereby connected to each other. Further downstream are arranged cross-linking means 85 which serve to provide the cross-section S of the packaging tube K formed from the packaging web B between the successive products P. The cross-connection means 8 comprise, as is clearly shown in the detail of figure 4, a top sealing bar 9 and a bottom beam 10, each of which is arranged movable with respect to one another and with each other with an associated actuation 11, 10 and 12 respectively. In addition, the cross-connection assembly 8 is arranged in a horizontal direction so that it moves with the continuously moving packaging tube K during the sealing operation. Immediately downstream of the cross-connection means 8, the products P rest on a conveyor track 13 with openings under which a vacuum is created, so that the products P are sucked onto this conveyor track 13. The relevant downstream transport track 13 is drivable independently of the transport tracks 16 located upstream of the cross-connecting means. All this is described in applicant's European patent application EP-B-0 689 994.
With the aid of this conveyor belt 13 it is possible to temporarily reduce the products P situated downstream of the cross-connecting means 8 in a moving speed, so that the distance A between the products P upstream and downstream of the cross-connecting means 8 is reduced. This creates space in the packaging tube K, so that the transverse seal S can be fitted. When this cross seal S is formed, the packaging tube tends to become wider because it is flattened. As a result, the product P does not get tight in the packaging, which is undesirable. After all, a packaging that is not tightly wrapped around the product will again cause 8 problems in the subsequent stacking and destacking of the products. Moreover, the appearance of a non-tight-fitting packaging is less attractive than that of a product contained in a tight-fitting packaging. The exemplary embodiment shown in figure 2 is provided with 5 constriction means in the form of a suction mouth 14. The suction mouth 14 is in use in the packaging tube K near and upstream of the cross connection means 8. The suction mouth 14 is connected to a suction line 15 connected to a negative pressure source (not shown). The suction line 15 extends from the suction mouth 14 in an upstream direction to a position where the packaging path B is not yet closed to a packaging tube K, which is clearly visible in figure 2 where the end of the line 15 is indicated with the reference number 15a .
Figure 2 clearly shows that the end 15a is located between the guide bars 5 where the longitudinal edges of the packaging web B 15 have therefore not yet met.
Because air is extracted from the packaging tube K at the suction mouth 14, the packaging tube will constrict, so that during sealing of the cross connection S the packaging will lie as tightly as possible around the product P.
20 Figuur 3 toont een doorsnede aanzicht over lijn III-III uit figuur 2.Figure 3 shows a cross-sectional view along line III-III from figure 2.
It is clearly visible that the pull band 6 is divided in two to form a recess along which the suction line 15 of the suction mouth 14 extends. Also shown in this view is the conveyor belt 16 on which the packaging tube with the products P rests.
25 Figuur 5 toont een alternatieve nadere uitwerking van de uitvinding waarbij de insnoerkracht Q van buitenaf op de langsranden van de verpakkingskoker K wordt uitgeoefend, welke insnoerkracht schematisch is weergegeven met behulp van de pijlen Q.Figure 5 shows an alternative further elaboration of the invention in which the constriction force Q is exerted from the outside on the longitudinal edges of the packaging tube K, which constriction force is shown schematically with the aid of the arrows Q.
In figure 6 the cross connection means 8 are shown in more detail in top view, as well as a first exemplary embodiment of 9 constriction means 17 in the form of mesh mouths 17. The blowing mouths 17 blow compressed air on the longitudinal edges of the packaging tube K in the direction indicated by the arrows Q. The arrows Q represented here represent the force with which the packaging tube K is constricted.
As shown in figure 7, the force Q can also be exerted by mechanical means, such as, for example, a rotating cam or two pairs of pins 18 which are movably arranged apart and which engage each other on the longitudinal edges of the packaging tube K 10 when a gap between two consecutive products P passes through these pins 18 or similar constriction elements.
Figure 8 shows another example of a conventional package in which no constriction has taken place during the sealing operation. It is clearly visible that the cross connections S of the package are wide relative to the rest of the package. Figure 9 shows a packaging manufactured using the method and the device according to the invention. It is clearly visible that the packaging lies tightly around the product P packed therein.
It is clear that the invention is not limited to the described exemplary embodiments, but that various modifications are possible within the scope of the invention. It is essential that by tightly constricting the packaging tube in the transverse direction at the level of the cross-connecting means, a tightly fitting package can be obtained around the product. As a result, the packaged products can be further processed in, for instance, stacking devices and the like, and the appearance of the packaged product is moreover particularly attractive.
