Abstract

Removal of difficult organic cpds. from aq. waste streams or from ground water under aerobic conditions uses white rot moulds and hydrogen peroxide as an oxidising agent, with the peroxide prepd. in situ during the removal of the organic cpds. The H2O2 is prepd. electrochemically, esp. on a cathode with specific effective surface \-1000 m2/m3, partic. a porous 3-dimensional cathode contg. graphite felt or grains. 0.1-5 mmols/l of H2O2, w.r.t. unit of enzyme activity/min., at an electric potential of +2V to -2V. The organic cpds. are removed at pH 2-6. The waste stream or ground water is satd. with oxygen. The fungus is pref. Phanerochaete chrysosporium. The appts. includes the cathode. An electrochemical cell for prepn. of H2O2 comprises a container with two compartments, in one of which there is a 3-dimensional porous electrode contg. graphite felt or grains, with specific effective surface \-1000 m2/m3, and in the other an electrode of Pt gauze. Each compartment has an inlet and an outlet.
