Abstract

To provide a heat exchanger capable of performing subcooling at a large extent without degrading heat exchanging performance. In an outdoor heat exchanger (25), a single relay header (259) functions to reverse the direction of refrigerant flowing in from flat tubes (251) in an upper path (52) and channeling the refrigerant into the flat tubes (251) in a lower path (51), achieving a simple configuration that enables a change in the number of paths and adjustment of the heat exchanger performance. The number of paths in the lower part of the heat exchanger serving as the outlet side of the refrigerant is smaller than that in the upper part serving as the inlet of the refrigerant. This enables subcooling to be performed to a large extent. The number of paths and the direction of the refrigerant are changed inside the relay header (259). This decreases a reduction in the flow rate of the refrigerant. As a result, the heat exchanging performance can be increased.
