Abstract

There is disclosed a method of extraction of Nephelium lappaceum extracts, a composition of phenolic compounds, with high free radical scavenging activity. The extract is characterised by its radical scavenging activity with IC50 (effective concentration for 50 % inhibition) of 3.8 A?g/ml (DPPH), 1.7 A?g/ml (ABTS), 1.7 A?g/ml (Galvinoxyl), no prooxidant capabilities and a phenolic content of 762-822 mg GAE/g extract. The extract is not cytotoxic to normal mouse fibroblasts cells or splenocytes. The use of this extract alone or in combination with other active principals, is of interest to the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and pharmaceutical industry.
