Abstract

A 2-stroke internal combustion engine ( 10) comprising: a cylinder (12); a piston ( 14) located in the cylinder ( 12) and connected to a crankshaft for reciprocal motion with respect to the cylinder (12), and defining a combustion chamber (22) with the cylinder ( 12); a fuel injector to selectively inject fuel into the combustion chamber (22); at least one inlet valve (30) to selectively deliver pressurised oxidising agent into the combustion chamber (22); at least one exhaust valve (20) to selectively open and allow exhaust gases to be expelled from the combustion chamber (22) and means for varying the exhaust valve (20) operating characteristics.
