Abstract

To provide methods of forming a cutting start point region and cutting an object to be processed without generating melt or fractures deviating from a line to be cut in the surface of the object. A line to be cut 5 in a surface 3 of an object to be processed 1 is irradiated with pulse laser light L while locating a light-converging point P within the object 1 under a condition causing multiphoton absorption. By moving the light-converging point P along the line to be cut 5, a modified region is formed within the object 1 along the line to be cut 5. When the object 1 is broken along the line to be cut 5 by using the modified region as a start point, the object 1 can be cut with a relatively small force. Upon irradiation with the laser light L, the surface 3 of the object 1 hardly absorbs the pulse laser light L, whereby the surface 3 will not melt because of the forming of the modified region.
