THE METHOD FOR BURNING GRANULAR MATERIAL FOR BURNING, ESPECIALLY LIMESTONE OR DOLOMITE IS EXECUTED IN A PARALLEL—SHAFT FURNACE (3) WHICH HAS AT LEAST TWO FURNACE SHAFTS (1, 2) INTERCONNECTED BY AN OVERFLOW CHANNEL (19) WHICH ARE OPERATED ALTERNATELY AS A BURNING SHAFT AND A REGENERATIVE EXHAUST GAS SHAFT BY REVERSING THE GAS FLOWS. IN ORDER THAT NEW MATERIAL FOR BURNING CAN BE SUPPLIED OUTSIDE A TIME—CONSUMING REVERSAL OF THE GAS STREAMS, DURING WHICH THE FURNACE SHAFTS ARE PRESSURELESS, THE EXHAUST GASES ARE SUCKED AWAY DURING THE FEEDING AND THUS BRIEFLY AT ELEVATED POWER SO THAT THE PRESSURE IN THE AREA OF THE FILLING OPENING (37) IS REDUCED TO ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE AND THUS THE EXHAUST GAS CAN BE PREVENTED FROM FLOWING AWAY VIA THE FILLING OPENING (37) . AS A RESULT, THE GRANULAR MATERIAL FOR BURNING CAN BE SUPPLIED SEVERAL TIMES DURING ONE BURNING CYCLE SO THAT THE EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURE INCREASES LESS RAPIDLY AND LONGER BURNING TIMES ARE POSSIBLE, WITH CORRESPONDINGLY HIGHER PERFORMANCE OF THE FURNACE
