Abstract

A POLYBUTENE HAVING AN IMPROVED PROPERTIES SUCH AS A HIGHER VISCOSITY INDEX IS PREPARED FROM C4 HYDROCARBONS PRODUCED FROM A CATALYTIC CRACKING OF A HEAVY OIL OR FROM A NAPHTHA CRACKING. SPECIFICALLY, THE INVENTIVE PROCESS COMPRISES: POLYMERIZING THE C4 HYDROCARBONS IN THE PRESENCE OF FRIEDEL-CRAFTS CATALYST IN AN AMOUNT RANGING FROM 0.05 TO 0.5 WT% BASED ON THE WEIGHT OF SAID ISOBUTENE IN SAID SOURCE AT A TEMPERATURE RANGING FROM -40 TO 50°C AND AT A PRESSURE RANGING FROM 1 TO 10 ATM, WHILE MAINTAINING THE MOLAR RATIO OF SAID ISOBUTENE IN A REACTOR TO SAID BUTADIENE IN SAID SOURCE AT 4:1 OR MORE AND THAT OF SAID ISOBUTENE TO SAID N-BUTENE IN SAID SOURCE AT 1:15 OR MORE, RESPECTIVELY; NEUTRALIZING THE POLYMERIZED PRODUCT CONTAINING THE CATALYST WITH A FIRST AQUEOUS ALKALINE SOLUTION WHILE ADJUSTING THE PH OF THE RESULTING SOLUTION SO THAT IT IS WITHIN A RANGE FROM 8 TO 12 TO REMOVE A MAJOR PORTION OF THE CATALYST FROM THE REACTION PRODUCT; EXTRACTING THE REMAINING PORTION OF THE CATALYST CONTAINED IN THE REACTION PRODUCT THE NEUTRALIZED PRODUCT WITH A SECOND AQUEOUS ALKALINE SOLUTION WHILE ADJUSTING THE PH OF THE RESULTING SOLUTION SO THAT IT IS AT 12 OR HIGHER; AND WASHING THE RESULTING PRODUCT WITH THE PROCESS WATER TO REMOVE ALKALINE COMPONENTS.
