Abstract

A PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FIBER STRANDS FROM A FIBROUS PLANT MATERIAL SUCH AS PALM OIL WASTE OR COCONUT HUSKS WHICH COMPRISES THE STEPS OF:A. PASSING THE FIBROUS PLANT MATERIAL TO A ROTARY SHREDDER APPRATUS IN WHICH THE MATERIAL IS CRUSHED AND SHREDDES TO FORM CONSISTENTLY SIZED PIECES; B. PASSING THE MASS OF PIECES TO A SINGLE SCREW PRESS AND COMPRESSING THE PIECES TO SQUEEZE LIQUID THEREFROM;C. PASSING THE LIQUID REDUCES FORM THE PRESS TO A MILL AND SUBJECTING THEN TO THE ACTION OF ROTATING FLAIS:i.TO FURTHER REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE PIECES; ii.TO SEPARATE THE FIBERS FROM THE PARENCHYMA; ANDiii. TO DISINTEGRATE THE FIBROUS MASS INTO INDIVIDUAL FIBER STRANDS, THE MILL HAVING A CASING WHICH AT LEAST IN THE LOWER PART IS PERFORATED TO ALLOW PASSAGE OF PARENCHYMA, SHORTS AND DUST, STONES AND OTHER DETRITUS; AND D. PASSING THE MATERIAL FROM THE MILL INTO A ROTARY SCREEN DRIER INCLUDING A DRUM(64) HAVING A MESH SURFACE (83), ENCLOSED WITHIN A CHAMBER (85) HAVING MEANS(79) FOR INTRODUCTION OF A HEATING MEDIUM, WHEREBY THE FIBER STRANDS ARE DRIED AND SUBSTANTIALLY FREED FROM ANY REMAINING IMPURITIES. APPRATUS FOR USE IN THE VARIOUS STEPS OF THE PROCESS IS ALSO DESCRIBED.(FIG 1)
