Abstract

SYNTHESIS GAS FOR A FISCHER-TROPSCH PROCESS IS OBTAINED BY PRIMARY STEAM REFORMING A HYDROCARBON FEEDSTOCK IN TUBES (16) IN A HEAT EXCHANGE REFORMER (18), SUBJECTING THE PRIMARY REFORMED GAS (20) TO SECONDARY REFORMING (26) AND USING THE HOT SECONDARY REFORMED GAS (30) TO HEAT THE TUBES IN THE HEAT EXCHANGE REFORMER (18). THE RESULTANT REFORMED GAS IS COOLED (34), DEWATERED (38) AND USED TO FORM HYDROCARBONS IN THE FISCHER-TROPSCH PROCESS (50). AT LEAST PART (22) OF THE TAIL GAS (54) FROM THE FISCHER-TROPSCH PROCESS IS RECYCLED BY ADDING IT TO THE PRIMARY REFORMED GAS (20) BEFORE SECONDARY REFORMING.
