THE INVENTION RELATES TO A FLAT-PANEL DISPLAY AND HAS AN OBJECT TO PROVIDE FLAT-PANEL DISPLAYS WITH WHICH A HIGH CONTRAST RATIO IS ACHIEVED AND THE INFLUENCE OF UNWANTED NOISE FROM A SURFACE CAN BE REDUCED SO THAT A HIGH-QUALITY PICTURE CAN BE DISPLAYED. TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECT, A FLAT-PANEL DISPLAY (1) OF THE INVENTION COMPRISES: A GENERALLY A FLAT-PANEL DISPLAY PANEL (100) INCLUDING A PAIR OF TRANSPARENT SUBSTRATES WHICH ACT AS ELECTRODES AND A LIGHT-MODULATING LAYER SANDWICHED BETWEEN THE TRANSPARENT SUBSTRATES; A GENERALLY RECTANGULAR LIGHT GUIDE PLATE (310); A SURFACE LIGHT SOURCE UNIT (300) PLACED ON THE BACK OF THE DISPLAY PANEL (100), THE SURFACE LIGHT SOURCE UNIT (300) INCLUDING A TUBULAR LIGHT SOURCE ELEMENT (320) WHICH IS INSTALLED ALONG A TWO ADJACENT SIDE OF THE LIGHT GUIDE PLATE (310), A FIRST POWER SUPPLY (323) LINE ELECTRICALLY CONNECTED TO ONE END OF THE TUBULAR LIGHT SOURCE ELEMENT (320), AND A SECOND POWER SUPPLY LINE (325) ELECTRICALLY CONNECTED TO THE OTHER END OF THE TUBULAR LIGHT SOURCE ELEMENT (320) AND RUN ALONG THE TUBULAR LIGHT SOURCE ELEMENT (320).
