Abstract

THE SYNTHESIS OF FLUORINATED DIMETHYL ETHERS OF THE FORMULA CF2HOCC1XFYH3-(X+Y) WHEREIN X IS 0, 1 OR 2; Y IS 1, 2 OR 3; AND WHEREIN (X+Y) IS 1, 2 OR 3. THE PROCESS INVOLVES CHLORINATION OF METHYL DIFLUOROMETHYL ETHER IN THE PRESENCE OF OXYGEN TO FORM A CHLORINATED REACTION PRODUCT OF THE FORMULA CF2HOCH3-ZC1Z WHEREIN Z IS 1 OR 2, AND WHEREIN THE FORMATION OF CF2HOCC13 IS INHIBITED. THE RESULTING COMPOUNDS(S) IS THEN FLUORINATED WITH HF BEFORE OR AFTER SEPARATION, TO GIVE A FLUORINATED REACTION PRODUCT INCLUDING THE AFOREMENTIONED FLUORINATED DIMETHYL ETHERS.
