Abstract

PALM ESTERS AND AMIDES ARE PREPARED BY DIRECT LIPASE-CATALYSED REATIONS OF PALM OIL WITH ANY AMOUNT OF FREE FATTY ACIDS, REFINED FRACTIONS OF PALM AND PALM KERNEL OILS AND FATTY ACID DISTILLATES OF PALM (PFAD) AND PALM KERNEL OILS. ALL REACTIONS WERE BY THE IMMOBILIZED LIPOZYME TM FROM NOVO WITH AND WITHOUT SOLVENTS AND YIELDS WERE GENERALLY IN THE RANGE OF 80 TO 100% FATTY ALCOHOLS USED WERE SATURATED AND UNSATURATED ALCOHOLS IN THE RANGE OF 2 TO 18 CARBON ATOMS PROVIDING ESTERS WHICH ARE LIQUIDS AND WAXES. VITAMIN E CONCENTRATE WAS OBTAINED FROM PFAD AFTER LIPASE-CATALYSED ESTERIFICATION WITH SHORT CHAIN ALCOHOLS (C1-C4) AND FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION UNDER REDUCED PRESSURE.TRANSESTERIFICATIONS OF CRUDE (RED) PALM OIL FRACTIONS WITH METHYL ACETATE AND DISTILLATION OF THE METHYL ESTERS PROVIDE CAROTENE CONCENTRATES. ESTERS AND AMIDES PREPARED BY LIPASE-CATALYSED REACTIONS OF RED PALM OIL FRACTIONS OR PFAD ARE PROCESSED TO GIVE CAROTENE OR VITAMIN E CONCENTRATES.
