A MECHANISM (10) FOR OPENING AND CLOSING GATES COMPRISES A MOTOR (15) (FIGURE 2) WHICH DRIVES A WORM GEAR (19) ENGAGED WITH A WORM WHEEL (30) FOR DRIVING AN OUTPUT SHAFT (32) CONNECTED TO A GATE IN USE. THE MECHANISM INCLUDES A CLUTCH ARRANGEMENT IN WHICH A PRESSURE PLATE (40) IS URGED BY SPRINGS (44) AGAINST THE WORM WHEEL (30) AND AN ABUTMENT ON A HUB (31). THE CLUTCH MECHANISM IS ENCLOSED IN A HOUSING (14) FILLED WITH LUBRICATING OIL AND SLIPPING OF THE CLUTCH ALLOWS MANUAL OVERRIDE OF THE DRIVE MECHANISM.@@(FIG.1)
