Abstract

The present invention relates to a spray-dried component which is in the form of a free-flowing particle with high chelating activity, comprising: at least 50%, preferably at least 60% by weight of a chelator, of 1 % to 25%, preferably 5% to 10% by weight of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphate, and preferably less than 10% by weight moisture

Description

SPRAYING COMPONENT THAT COMPRISES CHELATATOR FIELD OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates to a spray-dried component comprising a chelator. in particular diethi lentriaminepentamethesilphosphonic acid or its salts. Such components are useful in granular detergent products and also as intermediates in the manufacture of bar soap, detergent tablets and other forms of detergent such as agglomerated and simulated extruded products.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION US-A-4 259 200. Issued on March 31, 19B1"discloses phosphonates that form complexes with calcium ions" magnesium "zinc or aluminum" being the molar ratio of metal ion to phosphonate of at least i: i. It is disclosed that magnesium and phosphonate can be premixed in any suitable solvent »including water» optionally mixed with other detergent components »and spray dried. The aim is to improve the stability in the bleaching of bleaching compositions. EP-A-0 225 309 »published June 10, 197, describes the addition of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts to particles comprising diethylene-triaminepentamethylphosphine acid» for the purpose of improving the properties of free flow and storage. The amount of sulfate is from 60% to 200% of the dry weight of the chelator »corresponding to a weight ratio of metal ion salt to chelator of 0.6: 1 to 2: 1. The preferred water content after spray drying is less than 10% by weight of the particle. The prior art does not suggest that spray-dried components having a high chelator content (at least 50% by weight) and still maintaining good free-flowing properties can be prepared. The object of the present invention is to provide a spray-dried component that is in the form of a free-flowing particle with a super-chelating activity.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION This object is achieved by a spray-dried component comprising: i) at least 50%. preferably at least 60% by weight of a chelator; ii) from 1% to 25%. preferably from 5% to 10%, by weight of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphate; and i i) preferably less than 10% by weight moisture 1 ibre. The chelator is preferably a phosphonic or succinic acid, or phosphonic or succinic acid salt. Preferably the chelator is selected from the group consisting of diethylenetria inapenta eti lenphosphonic acid. IM.N'-disuccinic acid or mixtures or salts thereof. The alkaline earth metal is preferably magnesium.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The spray-dried component of the present invention comprises a chelator. Chelators are used for example in detergent compositions for their ability to form complexes with metal ions. such as iron and / or manganese, forming soluble chelates. Suitable chelators can be selected from the group consisting of indocarboxylates and amophosphonates. polyfunctionally substituted aromatic chelators and mixtures thereof. The aminocarboxylates include ethanediaminetetraacetates ("EDTA"), "N-hydroxyethylpentel dianatriacetates, nitr lotriacetates," and lendiami atetra-proprionates. trieti lentetraaminohexaacetatos. diethylenetria inopentaacetates. and etanoldigl icines »alkali metal, ammonium and substituted ammonium salts thereof, and mixtures thereof. Useful aminophosphonates include the lendiaminetetrakis (methylenphosphonates). sold as DEQUEST. "Preferably, these aminophosphonates do not contain alkyl or alkenyl groups with more than about 6 carbon atoms, Particularly preferred chelators are diethylenetriamipentamethylenephosphonic acid (" DTPMP ") and eti-Tendy" amnatetramethylphosphosphonic acid (EDTMP). Polyfunctionally substituted aromatic chelators are also useful in the components of the present, US-A-3 812 044. Issued May 21, 1974 for Connor and others. Preferred compounds of this type in acid form are the dihydroxydisulfobenzenes such as 1,2-dihydroxy-3,5-disulfurbune. A preferred biodegradable chelator for use herein is ethylenediamine-N.N'-disuccinate ("EDDS") "especially the CS.S3 isomer as described in US-A-4 704 233, issued November 3, 19T7 for Hartman and PerKins. Magnesium »aluminum or zinc sulfates are preferred for use in the present invention with magnesium sulfate being most preferred. Particularly preferred is the Epson salt. MgSO4 7H20 »that is to say the hydrated crystalline form of magnesium sulphate with seven moles of water. The chelators used in the present invention can be conveniently provided from commercially available sources in aqueous solution. Typical commercially available solutions have a chelating activity of about 40% to about 60% by weight. The spray-dried component can be produced by mixing said aqueous solution with the required amount of the sulfate, with the addition of more water »if necessary to reduce the total solids content» and then forming granules by sprinkling the solution in a spray-drying tower conventional countercurrent or concurrent. The water in the tower is evaporated by hot gas. usually hot air, preferably up to a level of less than 10% by weight of free moisture in the final spray-dried component. Optionally, spray-dried granules can be treated with additional drying and / or cooling steps in conventional treatment equipment such as a fluidized bed. Normally larger and smaller fractions are removed, for example by passing the granules on a vibrating screen. Additional treatment including additional steps of granulation, agglomeration or compaction as well as dry blending with other components may be to provide finished products such as detergent powders, bar soap and tablets.
EXAMPLES Example l Example 2 DTPMP 80 84 MgS04 7H20 10 5 Sodium chloride 5 6 Moisture 5 5 DTPMP is the heptasodium salt of diethyltriamine-pentamethyl-phosphonic acid. MgS04 7H20 is the salt of Epsom All levels are in percent by weight unless otherwise specified.
The spray-dried component produced in these examples has an overall density of 500 g / 1 to 700 g / 1. The component absorbs very little moisture after its manufacture (for example of atmospheric humidity) and therefore minimizes or eliminates the flow and cake formation problems »even in high temperature and high humidity environments.
