Description
"AN APPARATUS FOR CONTROLLING AN OPERATION OF A DATA EXHIBIT CHANNEL IN A MONITOR AND A METHOD FOR THE
SAME"
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an apparatus for controlling an operation of a data presentation channel (DDC) of a monitor so that a personal computer (PC) with the DDC function is compatible with a personal computer without the DDC function and a method for it.
2. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREVIOUS TECHNIQUE
Figure 1 shows a project of an integrated circuit (IC) that performs the DDC function. If energy is applied to a monitor, the monitor data is transmitted successively to a PC (not illustrated) connected thereto through an SDA data port of IC 1 by a byte. During this time, a SCL clock port of the IC is in "high" logic and a vertical synchronization signal is applied from the PC to a VCLK port of IC 1. On the other hand, if the logical state of the SCL clock port converts from "high" logic to "low" logic, changes an operation or operation mode of IC 1. In the changed operation mode, IC 1 receives a read signal of type I2C on the SCL and SDA ports from the PC, and upon receiving the read signal, the data of the monitor is transmitted to the PC synchronized with a SCL port clock. However, in case a monitor with the DDC function is connected to the PC without the DDC function, the data of the monitor with the DDC function is not detected by the PC without the DDC function. That is, when using the monitor with the DDC function, the PC with the DDC function is not compatible with the PC without the DDC function.

In accordance with the object of the present invention, there is provided an apparatus for controlling an operation of a part of the data presentation channel installed in a monitor, comprising a means for determining an operating state of the part of the presentation channel of data and a means for enabling or disabling the operation of the part of the data presentation channel that responds to an output of the means of determination. The means of determination comprises a key input means to which a selection data is applied which shows the operating status of the part of the data presentation channel and a means for presenting a data presented on the screen, in accordance with the Selection data in a video form. The training / incapacitation means comprises a means for storing the selection data, a microcomputer for generating a control signal in accordance with the data stored in the storage medium and a means for controlling a supply or supply of power voltage to the part of the data presentation channel in response to the control signal from the microcomputer, whereby the operating state of the part of the data presentation channel is controlled. The storage medium, which maintains a previous data stored therein, even when the energy of the monitor is absent, is a programmable read-only, electrically erasable memory. Also, the means of controlling the power supply comprises a transistor connected / disconnected in accordance with the control signal sent from the microcomputer. In accordance with another object of the present invention, there is provided a method for controlling an operation of a part of the data presentation channel installed in a monitor, comprising the steps of (a) analyzing a data stored in a storage medium if The power monitor is supplied, (b) enable / disable the part of the data presentation channel in accordance with the data analyzed, (c) apply an input data representing a new operating state of the data presentation channel part to a medium of key entry, in case there is an intention to change the operating status of the part of the data presentation channel, (d) store the input data in the storage medium and provide step (a) with the data input as the stored data and (e) enable / incapacitate the part of the data presentation channel in accordance with the input data. The training / incapacitation step in steps (b) is accomplished by controlling the power supply to the part of the data presentation channel.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION The advantages and object of the present invention will be evident by explaining the preferred embodiment of the present invention with reference to the attached drawings. Figure 1 shows a general construction of the IC that performs a data presentation channel function. Figure 2 illustrates an apparatus for controlling an operation of the data presentation channel part installed on a monitor in accordance with the present invention. Figure 3 is a flow chart for controlling an operation of a part of the data display channel installed in a monitor in accordance with the present invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE MODALITY
Referring to Figure 2, an apparatus for controlling the operation of a part of the data presentation channel includes a voltage switch 2 for controlling the voltage supply to the IC, a microcomputer 3 for controlling the voltage switch 2, a electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) 4 for storing the information regarding the operation of the DDC part, which is carried out by half of the computer 3 and for providing stored information to the microcomputer 3, a part 5 key input connected to the microcomputer 3 and to which a selection data to select whether the operation of the DDC part is carried out or not applied, a display presentation processor 6 (OSD) receiving the selection data from the microcomputer 3 to produce the OSD data in response to the selection data, an image display device 7 for changing the data or sent from the OSD processor 6 to a video signal and a color picture tube (CPT) 8 that receives the result of the image display device 7. Here, instead of EEPROM 4, even when no power is applied to the monitor, a memory capable of maintaining the previously stored data must be used. The voltage switch 2 has a transistor Ql formed between the supply voltage Vcc and the earth Vss and is switched on / off in accordance with the level of the logic signal that is provided from the microcomputer 3 and two resistors Rl and R2. The input part 5 includes an OSD menu key 5a to present a menu where the operation is presented if the DDC part is carried out or not, a first control key 5b to which an input is applied which represents a command to carry out the operation of the DDC part, and a second control key 5c to which an input representing a command is applied so as not to carry out the operation of the DDC part. First, a basic principle to control the operation of the DDC part installed in the monitor will be presented below. If the PCs without the DDC function is connected to the DDC monitor, since the monitor information is not detected, a user buttons the OSD menu key 5a of the key input part 5a and then selects the second key. 5c command to disable the operation of the DDC part. On the other hand, if the PC with the DDC function is connected to the monitor with the DDC function, the user selects the OSD menu key 5a and the first control key 5b. The information determined in accordance with the selection of the first or second control keys is stored in EEPROM 4 and then used as the initial data that is being read from the EEPROM 4 when the power is again supplied to the monitor. With reference to Figure 3, if the power is supplied to the monitor connected to the PC, the microcomputer 3 provides clock to EEPROM 4 through the SCL clock port, reads the data stored in EEPROM 4 through the data port SDA and Analyze the reading data. If the analyzed data is a logical "0", the microcomputer 3 generates a "high" logic signal on a port Pl and provides the transistor Ql of the voltage switch 2 with the logic signal "high". The transistor Ql is connected and 5V supplied through the resistor Rl is the ground to cut the voltage supply to the IC 10 through the nodes X and Y. Therefore, the IC does not work, disabling the operation of the CDD part. During this time, the nodes C and D at the SCL clock port and the SDA data port keep the logic "high" by 5V connected with the resistors R3 and R4. Accordingly, the monitor data is transmitted to the PC through the SDA data port. That is, it is possible to detect monitor information by disabling the operation of the DDC part independently of the PC's DDC function. Therefore, the problem generated using the PC without the DDC function can be solved sufficiently. On the other hand, if the data analyzed is a logical "1", the microcomputer 3 generates a "low" logic signal on the port Pl thereof and supplies the "low" logic signal to the transistor Ql of the voltage switch 2. The transistor Ql is disconnected and therefore 5V connected with the resistor Rl is supplied to the IC 10 through the nodes X and Y. Accordingly, the IC 10 is driven to perform the DDC function as described in FIG. part related to Figure 1. If the modification of the operating status of the DDC part is the one that you want to carry out, that is, by changing the PC with the DDC to the PC without the DDC function and vice versa, use the method described before the explanation of Figure 3. The OSD menu key 5a of the key entry part 5 is selected during training or incapacitation of the DDC operation and then using select one of the first key 5b of command and of the second control key 5c. The port Pl of the microcomputer produces a "high" or "low" logic signal to the voltage switch 2 in accordance with the selected control key, altering the operating status of the DDC part. The information regarding the operation of the DDC part, which is supported by the user to the key input part 5, is stored in EEPROM and is used as an initial control data of IC 10, when the power is applied new to the monitor. In detail, in case the user selects the first control key 5b, the logical data "1" is stored in EEPROM 4 and is read when the power is applied again to the monitor, enabling the IC 10. the user selects the second control key 5c, the logical "0" data is stored in EEPROM 4 and is read when the power is applied again to the motor, thus incapacitating the IC 10. Therefore, the PC without the function of DDC is compatible with the PC with the DDC function. As described above, by using the apparatus to control the operation of the DDC part, since the user can determine the operating status of the DDC part using the presented OSD menu, the various information of the monitor such as the class of the monitor is normally detected through the SDA data port of the IC 10, which performs the DDC function even when the monitor with the DDC function is connected to the PC, without the DDC function.
