Abstract
A frame for an elastomeric drive belt having at least one wire reinforcement layer made of two spirally wound cables on each side of a circumferential midplane, one in the S direction and the other in the direction
Description
A FRAMEWORK FOR AN ELASTOMERIC IMPULSION BAND AND A BAND - ELASTOMERIC IMPULSION PRODUCED WITH THE SAME
Field of the Invention This invention relates to an endless elastomeric drive belt. More particularly, it is related to a drive belt constructed to prevent follow-up problems caused by lateral forces generated during the use of the belt.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION U.S. Patent No. 4,721,498 discloses an endless elastomeric drive belt designed to minimize the lateral displacement of a first substantially wire cable reinforcement layer parallel to the longitudinal direction of the web. , a second wire reinforcing layer stretched at a deflected angle and a third reinforcing layer of wire rope stretched at a deflection angle. The angle of the cables of the third layer is greater than that of the second layer so that the lateral force components of the two outer layers are locked together when they are being bent around a wheel. Alternatively, the patent describes a band with two outer layers that tend to equal and opposite angles of deviation, however, the two layers are constructed differently with the third layer having fewer ends than the second layer either having smaller cables or a lower number of cables, again to balance the lateral forces exerted by the two outer layers. Producing two layers of different construction is inefficient, costly and can lead to difficulties if they are mistakenly interchanged in a manufacturing operation. U.S. Patent No. 5,211,609 discloses an endless elastomeric band designed to minimize lateral displacement, having a spirally wound reinforcing cable, a skewed first layer of wire reinforcement lying at an angle having the same direction as the first spirally wound cable and a second biased layer of wire reinforcement held at an opposite angle but equal to the first biased-wire reinforcement. The second biased rewinding layer of wire rope is spaced at a distance from the first reinforcement of spiral wire cable so as to neutralize the generated lateral forces, while in use, of the elastomeric drive belt. complete
Summary of the Invention In accordance with the practice of the present invention there is provided an elastomeric drive belt having a frame whose construction provides a balance of all the lateral forces exerted thereon which would effect the tracking of the band.
The frame for the endless elastomeric drive belt has a circumferential midplane and a reinforcement layer - wire made of two spirally wound cables on each of the plane, one in the S direction and the other in the Z direction. S and Z directions refer to spiral of right hand and left hand, respectively, as it is used in the usual way in the industry.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the frame. Figure 2 is a sectional view of an elastomeric drive belt using the frame of the invention. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the web with the layer portions broken into layers.
Detailed Description of the Invention The frame, generally shown at 10, is produced on a cylindrical mandrel (not shown) by applying one or more layers of an elastomeric matrix 13 either directly to the mandrel or on a printing fabric that has been applied to the mandrel. mandril. This is followed by a layer of two reinforcements 12, 14 of spiral cable wrapped around it. The two cables 12, 14 are wound on each side of a circumferential half plane 11, so that one is left in the direction of S and the other is in the direction of Z. The additional elastomeric 13 is then applied to encapsulate the spiral cables. In order to produce an elastomeric drive belt - generally shown at 15, additional layers of wire reinforcement such as 16 may be laid perpendicular to the plane 11. While Figure 2 illustrates the use of two reinforcement layers 16, 18 perpendicular to each other on opposite sides of the spiral layer, it can be seen that only one of them can be used or - both can be placed on the same side of the spiral layer. In order to complete the elastomeric drive belt 15, the central guide tabs 20 and folds 22 are then secured to opposite sides of the frame. The layers of the elastomeric matrix that are used to form the interior or exterior surface and to coat the various layers of cable reinforcement as well as to form the folds 22 and projections 20 can be any of the number of well-known natural or synthetic polymers. in the field and co-posed with the usual rubber chemicals to provide adhesion to the cable reinforcement and to vulcanize it to a unitary body. Depending on the size of the drive belt to be produced and the size of the spiral reinforcement cable, it is contemplated that the alpha angle of the spiral cable reinforcement may vary from 0.0159 to 0.35e. While certain representative embodiments and details have been shown for the purpose of illustrating the invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications may be made therein without abandoning the spirit or scope of the invention.
