Abstract

A hanging shelving system for assembly with a molded utility shed is composed of several wire shelves with hangers at each corner. The hangers cooperate with reinforcing strips in the molded shed roof to suspend the shelves.

Description

HANGING SHELF SYSTEM FOR UTILITY SHELF RELATED APPLICATION This application relates to the Patent Application of E. U.
No. 10 / presented the entitled, Expandable Plastic Utility Shed.
FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention relates generally to a large enclosure constructed of plastic structural panels. More specifically, the present invention relates to a modular construction system that uses shelves that have integrated connectors to cooperate with integrated connectors in the ceiling for stability and support. DESCRIPTION OF THE PREVIOUS TECHNIQUE This invention relates generally to a large enclosure constructed of plastic structural panels. More specifically, the present invention relates to a modular construction system that uses shelves that have integrated connectors to cooperate with connectors built into the structural panels for stability and support. Utility sheds are a must for lawn and garden care, as well as ample storage space for the home in general. Typically items such as garden tractors, snow blowers, plowmen, ATVs, motorcycles and the like consume a large amount of the floor space available from the garage, forcing the owner of the house to park his car outside. Large items, such as those mentioned above, require accessories and supplies that must also be stored, as well as other small tools. To avoid using more floor space for these supplies, a rack system is usually built as units not embedded or attached to the walls of the shed. The non-recessed units are unstable, particularly when they carry a very heavy load. And in modular plastic sheds, now available, it is difficult to stick shelves to plastic panels without damaging the integrity of the panels. Modular shelving systems are well known as illustrated by U.S. Patent No. 6, 178,896 to Houk, Jr., U.S. Patent No. 5,709, 158 to Wareheim, and U.S. Patent No. 5,588,541 to Goetz. These are independent modular units with multiple horizontal shelves supported by sectional legs or, in the case of the Goetz Patent, a rear panel. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Accordingly, it is a principal object of the present invention to provide a hanging rack system to cooperate with the structural elements in a plastic utility shed for stability and support. It is another object of the present invention to provide a modular shelving system with flexibility in assembling to support articles of different weight and different size. It is still a further objective of the invention of the moment to provide a manual assembly of the shelving system. Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with any of the accompanying drawings wherein certain embodiments of this invention are set forth by way of illustration and example. Any drawings contained herein constitute a part of this specification and include example embodiments of the present invention and illustrate various objectives and aspects thereof. Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with any of the accompanying drawings wherein certain embodiments of this invention are set forth by way of illustration and example. Any drawings contained herein constitute a part of this specification and includes exemplary embodiments of the present invention and illustrate various objectives and aspects thereof. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURE The figure is a perspective of a utility shed with a rack system for hanging. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION As shown in the Figure, the utility shed 10 is a structure assembled from molded panels with the roof panels removed. The shed can also have floor panels. The panels, which include the roof panels, are reinforced with metal strips for structural safety, strength and rigidity. The excess structural strength provided by the strips can be used to support the interior shelving provided as an accessory or as an article for market. As shown, a side wall panel 1 1 is attached to and end panel 12. Each of the end panels 12 has an edge 13 to support an inclined roof. The reinforcing strip 14, in the shape of an easel, joins each end panel to the center of the edge. The reinforcing strip 15 of the roof and the reinforcing strip 16 of the roof are arranged on opposite sides of the trestle and at the same level with each other. The ends of the trestle and the roof strips abut the inside of the ridge 13 allowing a continuous straight top edge to cover the ends of the roof panels. The roof panels (not shown) are in contact with the trestle and the reinforcement strips and have separate fasteners that secure the roof panels to the reinforcement strips. Due to the inclination of the roof there is a vertical space between the roof panels and the reinforcement strips on each side. By hanging the shelves of the reinforcement strips this space can be used for storage. The shelf 20, shown in the drawing, assembled from several long wire shelves 21, 22 and 23 are suspended from the reinforcing strips by hangers placed at each corner of each shelf. The shelf 21 has a storage surface formed of plastic or metal ribs 24 extending across the width of the shelf. Each end of the ribs ends with a portion 25 and 26 turned downward. The ribs are supported by longitudinal bars 27, 28 and 29 that extend along the shelf. The turned down ends are fixed to the bars 30 and 31. The shelves are of a length to cover the distance between the reinforcing strips 15 and 16. Each hanger 32 is made of metal or plastic of a required strength. The upper end 33 of the hanger is a double C-shaped hook with the upper portion in shape to match the outer surface of the reinforcing strip 15 and 16. The lower portion of the C-shaped hook 33 is glued to one end of a spacer 34 that extends across the width of the shelf. The other end of the separator 34 is glued to another hanger 32 at the adjacent corner of the shelf. The lower end 35 of the hanger 32 is a curl that extends around two adjacent ribs 24 and the bar 30 near the turned-down portions of the shelf. The loop closes around the spacer 34 and the lower portion of the C-shaped hook. The shelves can be enclosed with the molded utility shed or as a separate accessory or as a market item. In the factory the hangers are usually glued to the corners of the shelves. The assembly requires only placing the upper C-shaped hook on the roof reinforcement strips. It is understood that although a certain form of the invention is illustrated, it is not limited to the specific forms or arrangements shown and described herein. It will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes can be made without departing from the scope of the invention and the invention is not considered to be limited to what is shown and described in the specification and any drawings / figures included herein.
