A vertical composting apparatus (100) having a housing (110) including at least one wall (120); an upper processing zone (150) in the housing (110); at least one lower processing zone (160) below the upper processing zone (150); at least one agitating device (190) separating the upper processing zone (150) and the at least one lower processing zone (160); a waste inlet (40) above the upper processing zonen (150); and a waste outlet (300) below the lowest of the at least one lower processing zones (160).
