Abstract

La presente invencion se refiere al descubrimiento de marcadores para enfermedades neurodegenerativas. Mas particularmente, se decubrio que las formas de la proteina IRP-2 que no son capaces de experimentar oxidacion en residuos de cisteina criticos son el disgnostico para la enfermedad neurodegenerativa, incluyendo pero sin limitarse a Enfermedad de Alzheimer (AD). Las modalidades incluyen los acidos nucleicos que codifican las proteinas IRP-2 mutante y fragmentos de la misma, proteinas IRP-2 mutante y fragmentos de la misma, anticuerpos dirigidoas al epitope presentes en las proteinas IRP-2 mutantes y fragmentos de las mismas, losmetodos para hacer estos acidos nucleicos y los polipeptdos, asi como los procedimientos para diagnosticar una enfermedad neurodegenerativa en animales, tales como humanos en riesgo de contraer AD o el sindrome de dano cognoscitivo benigno (MCI) . El nivel o distribucion del hierro en el cerebro humano, segun se detemina por la formacion de imagenes de resonancia magnetica (MRI), puede utilzarse para diagnosticar AD y/o MCI.
