Abstract

A two sided piloted weld nut enables the nut to be welded either way. It can be used with a nut feeder, or to increase production on manual welding process. These nuts will eliminate the root cause of common nuts being welded upside down.

Description

BILATERAL PILOTED SOLDED NUT SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A bilateral pilot welded nut. Allows the nut to be welded in either of two ways. It can be used with a nut feeder, or to increase production in the manual welding process. These nuts will eliminate the main cause of the common nuts being welded upside down. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to piloted welded nuts or the like, proposed to be placed on a metal plate and welded to allow a member to be clamped. It is common for all piloted welded nuts to have a flat surface that makes contact with an electrode and the opposite side has projections and the pilot to be located and welded to a metal sheet. When the electrode makes contact with the flat surface, an electric current is sent through the nut to the point of greatest resistance, the opposite end that is in contact with the metal sheet. With the pilot located in the hole in the blade, the welded projections that make contact with the surface will join the metal. This will fasten the nut to the blade. This type of nut can be inefficient when the production welding returns quickly. Frequently the nuts will be welded upside down. They come together only until the part is cooled. This is a common problem in the automotive industry, usually caused by the error of the operator or the nut feeder that fails to detect it. Also the large flat surface of the nut that makes contact with the electrode can create expulsion and heat loss. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION It has been found that these disadvantages can be overcome by duplicating the pilot and the welding projections on both sides of the nut. With the pilot member at a greater distance from the body than the welding projections, the electrode will now make contact with the pilot. The smaller surface area of the pilot creates a more concentrated flow of current and the welding projections at the opposite end will be attached to the metal sheet. Usually with a solder penetration deeper than an ordinary soldering nut. The advantage of the bilateral welding nut is the fact that it will eliminate the root that causes the nuts to be welded upwards, decreasing the costs of the rejected material. With bilateral welded pilot nut can increase production. Operators will not have to be careful which way to put the nut. It can also be automated by using a nut feeder with relative ease.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS In the drawings that illustrate the embodiments of the invention. Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typical square weld nut with pilots and projections extending both above and below the nut. Figure 2 is a plan view of this mode. Figures 3 and 4 with lateral views of this modality. Figure 5 is a perspective view of the welding nut in typical hexagonal shape with pilot and welding projections both above and below. Figure 6 is the plan view of this modality. Figure 7 is the side view of this modality. Figure 8 shows the example of the welding nut in applications of Figures 5, 6, 7 and the process as a sectional drawing that includes the electrode 4, the base 5 and the metal sheet 3 to which the nut is welded .
The welding nut shows arrangements of two pilots 1, above and below the nut. One end of the pilot 1 will be located in a hole in the metal sheet 3, the opposite end of the pilot 1 will make contact with the electrode 4.
When a electric current is sent through the electrode 4 and through the welding nut the resistance between the welding projections 2 and the metal sheet 3 creates the welding.
