A detergent composition formulated with conventional detersive surfactants, optional builders, detergent adjuncts and a suds suppressor, wherein said suds suppressor is an amino acid of formula (I), or its alkali metal, alkaline earth metal salt or mixtures thereof, wherein R1 is an alkyl, aryl or alkaryl group containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms, R2 is an alkylene, arylene or alkarylene group containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms, R5 is H or an alkyl, aryl, or alkaryl group containing from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. The invention also relates to a detergent composition comprising a mixture of amidoacid and amidoperacid suds suppressors and to an aqueous wash liquor containing a detersive surfactant comprising a C10-C20 alkyl sulphate, optionally together with builders and detergent adjuncts and a suds suppressor compound wherein said suds suppressor is formed from a suds suppressor precursor.
