Abstract
The present invention is an electrochemical reactor for carrying out the production of high purity hydrogen by the electrolysis of superficial waters without prior treatment than the addition of sodium sulphate at low concentrations. The advantages of the invention are: a) consists of low-cost materials for the electrodes as aluminum, b) not using a membrane or diaphragm for the separation of the oxygen and hydrogen gases, in contrast using a tube of PVC that performs this function, c) the reactor being designed to operate with solar energy in the form of electric power, i.e. by solar panels, d) the electrolyte support used is sodium sulphate which is not toxic, in comparison with the hydroxides which are commonly used in the production of hydrogen, e) the water that is used is from surface water, i.e. high purity water is not required, f) the hydrogen generated is of high purity, which involves no toxic gas generation such as the hydrogen sulfide acid. Besides these advantages in the production of hydrogen, the treated water suffers electrocoagulation and obtains beneficial characteristics, such as the removal of turbidity, the color, nitrites, nitrates, the total hardness, the COD, the ammoniac nitrogen and total coliforms.
