Un método para tratar efluentes líquidos, dicho método comprendiendo una etapa para metanizar dicho efluente dentro de un metanizador (32) produciendo biogás, lodos metanizados y un efluente metanizado, una etapa de tratamiento biológico de dicho efluente metanizado dentro de un área de tratamiento biológico (34) produciendo lodos biológicos y un efluente tratado, una etapa para extraer lodos biológicos espesados de dicha área de tratamiento biológico (34), una etapa de digestión anaeróbica de al menos una parte de dichos lodos metanizados y dichos lodos biológicos espesados dentro de un digestor (44) produciendo biogás y lodos digeridos, una etapa para recircular al menos una parte de dichos lodos digeridos en dicho metanizador (21) y una etapa para extraer al menos una parte de lodos digeridos.
