Abstract

La presente invención describe métodos eficientes de fermentación de bajo costo para la producción eficiente de poli-3-hidroxialcanoatos (PHAs) de cadena media que comprenden el crecimiento de microorganismos productores de PHAs utilizando aceites vegetales como fuente de carbono, ya sea en presencia ó ausencia de sacárido. Los métodos de la invención comprenden producir biomasa en cultivo por lote, posteriormente producir biomasa en lote alimentado mediante la adición de sacárido y una fuente de nitrógeno al medio de cultivo y finalmente producir PHAs mediante la adición de aceite vegetal como fuente de carbono bajo limitación de nitrógeno o fósforo. Mediante el método de la invención, se obtiene al menos un 90% en peso seco de PHAs de cadena media del medio de fermentación, presentando de 5 a 10% de unidades monoméricas de cadena media en su estructura.
