Abstract

The invention is related to the field of precise time-to-digital conversion. Precision is provided by combination of sampling a counter and the interpolation - additional measurement within counter clock period. Secondary pulse with a fixed width is produced in response to an input event. The pulse is used for generating a derivative analog signal in the shape of isosceles triangle. Shaping is done by means of charging-discharging a capacitor. Derivative signal is continuously digitized by AD converter and conversion results are analyzed on the fly. When such signal is detected, digital codes of the first and the third AD conversion of the signal are memorized. Interpolation result is the difference between these codes. Derivative signal, which is used in the proposed method, has constant duration equal to three clock periods. That determines that the dead time of interpolation is constant and short. It is possible to vary the precision of interpolation by changing the AD conversion resolution, the dead time, however, remains the same.
