Abstract

This invention pertains to the industrial production of furfural and acetic acid from different raw materials containing pentosan, e.g., foliferous wood. The raw material is to be ground to the technological size of chip and moistened with catalytic liquid containing organic acids, sulphuric acid and/or salt or a mixture of salts, which create cations with a charge of no less than two when dissociated, and then processed with the water steam flow under increased pressure. The suggested catalyst composition makes it possible to selectively catalyze the pentosan hydrolysis, pentose dehydration, and hemicellulose polysaccharide deacetylation reactions, which in turn allows the reduction of the catalyst consumption without reducing furfural output. The steam going out of the reactor and containing furfural is to be condensed, thus obtaining secondary steam, which is used for separation and purification of furfural and acetic acid by the rectification method as well as for other purposes. The raw material remainder after processing with water steam is unloaded from the reactor by the method of decompression, yet the steam appearing during the unloading process is condensed in a closed water consumption cycle with continuous or periodic drainage of the circulating liquid excess for chemical and/or biological purification. If necessary, the accumulated raw material remainder is partly freed from water by pressing and/or drying, and used as fuel to obtain technological steam and/or for other purposes. In general, the suggested method allows not only a significant reduction in catalyst consumption, but also the realization of a waste-free, energetically closed and environment-friendly technological process with the use of both continuous and periodic operation reactors.
