The ethylene glycol is made by reacting ethylene oxide with water at 100-200 deg.C, using 0.01-10 wt% 12-heteropolyacid such as 12-tungstophosphoric acid, 12-molybdophosphoric acid, 12-tungdtosilicic acid or 12-molybdosilicic acid (HxM3-xPWyMo12-yO40 or HuM4-uSiWvMo12-vO40, where x=0-3,y=0-12,u=0-4,v=0-12 and M is metallic salt) as a catalyst. The catalyst is odorless, not evaporated because of large molecular weight and can be used continuously.
