Abstract

The potassium titanate fiber is produced by mixing a titanium oxide with a potassium carbonate(mixing mol ratio of 3-7:1), mixing the mixture with 20-80 mol% of a flux i. e. K2WO4, K2M0O4,, KCl and/or K4P2O7 in water or organic solvent i. e. acetone, benzene, toluene, ether or alcohol, firing the mixture at 800-1200 deg. C for 1-7hr to crystallize the potassium titanate, slowly cooling the crystallized product at 0.5-10 deg. C/hr, defiberizing the cooled product. The fiber has a good heat resistance, chemical stability and abrasion resistance, and is used as a refractory heat insulating material, plastics, a reinforcing material of ceramics and light metals and a friction material.
