Copolymers derived from cresol or chlorophenol, HCHO and resorcinol were tested with alkanolamines to give adhesives for reinforcing polyester fibers for rubber. Thus, 60.8 parts of 36.5% HCHO was added to a mixt. of 4-CIC6H4OH 50, aq. NaOH soln. 56.8 and H2O 95 parts at 60-65≰C for 1.5hr, heated 1hr at 80≰C, cooled to 45≰C. The mixt. 51.3, conc H2SO4 29.8 and H2O 70 parts was added and heated 5hr at 90≰C to give a copolymer. The copolymer was dissolved in 80 parts of a 3N ethanolamine soln. and mixed with index 181 compn. to give an adhesive.
