BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The present invention relates to thin film transistor array panels and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).
A general liquid crystal display device includes two display panels including a pixel electrode and a common electrode and a liquid crystal layer having dielectric anisotropy interposed therebetween. The pixel electrodes are arranged in a matrix and connected to switching elements such as thin film transistors (TFTs) to receive data voltages one by one in sequence. The common electrode is formed over the entire surface of the display panel and receives a common voltage. The pixel electrode, the common electrode, and the liquid crystal layer therebetween form a liquid crystal capacitor, and the liquid crystal capacitor becomes a basic unit that forms a pixel together with a switching element connected thereto.
In such a liquid crystal display, a voltage is applied to two electrodes to generate an electric field in the liquid crystal layer, and the intensity of the electric field is adjusted to adjust the transmittance of light passing through the liquid crystal layer to obtain a desired image. In this case, in order to prevent degradation caused by an electric field applied to the liquid crystal layer for a long time, the polarity of the data voltage with respect to the common voltage is inverted frame by frame, row by pixel, or pixel by pixel.
In such a liquid crystal display, a voltage is applied to two electrodes to generate an electric field in the liquid crystal layer, and the intensity of the electric field is adjusted to adjust the transmittance of light passing through the liquid crystal layer to obtain a desired image. In this case, in order to prevent deterioration caused by the application of an electric field in one direction to the liquid crystal layer for a long time, the polarity of the data voltage with respect to the common voltage is inverted frame by frame, row by pixel, or pixel by pixel.
In the method of manufacturing a display panel for a liquid crystal display device, a pattern such as a wiring or a contact hole is formed by patterning by a photolithography process using a mask, and a plurality of display panels for display devices are formed on one mother substrate, and photo etching is performed. After completing the pattern through the process, the parent substrate is separated into a display panel.
In the photolithography process, when the active area in which the pattern is formed on the mother substrate is larger than the mask size, a step and repeat process is performed by dividing the active area to form a pattern in the active area. Split exposure is required. In this case, the actual shot may cause distortion such as shift, rotation, and distortion of the mask, so that the shots are not aligned correctly, and thus the parasitic capacitance difference between each wiring and the pixel electrode between the shots is different. Or a pattern position difference occurs.
Since the difference in parasitic capacitance and the position of the pattern causes the difference in the electrical characteristics and the aperture ratio of each region, the difference in screen brightness at the boundary between shots results in poor stitching or flicker. Cause problems. Here, flicker is a flicker phenomenon caused by a difference in the effective voltage applied to the liquid crystal between frames based on a common voltage. Various causes of flicker have been suggested, but one of them is a kickback voltage. to be. This kickback voltage is caused by the parasitic capacitance present between the gate electrode and the drain electrode of the thin film transistor. If the distortion, such as mask transition, rotation, and torsion, occurs between the gate electrode and the drain electrode in different shots, The capacity varies from area to area, which causes the screen to flicker.
In order to reduce image quality deterioration due to the kickback voltage, the polarity of the data voltage may be reversed for each pixel among the inversion methods of the data voltage (hereinafter referred to as "dot inversion"). However, since the polarities of the data voltages must be inverted for each predetermined row and predetermined column, the operation of applying the data voltage to the data line becomes complicated and the problem due to the signal delay of the data line becomes serious. As a result, manufacturing processes are complicated and manufacturing costs are increased, such as making data lines with low resistance materials to reduce signal delay.
On the other hand, when inverting the polarity of the data voltage for each predetermined column (hereinafter referred to as "column inversion"), the polarity of the data voltage flowing through one data line is inverted only for each frame, thereby greatly reducing the signal delay problem of the data line.
However, since thermal inversion does not maintain the advantages of dot inversion, the image quality of the liquid crystal display is still deteriorated due to flicker.
The liquid crystal display also includes a gate line for transmitting a gate signal for controlling a switching element, a data line for transmitting a data voltage for applying to a field generating electrode, a gate driver and a data driver for generating a gate signal and a data voltage. . The gate driver and data driver are usually composed of a plurality of driving integrated circuit chips, and the number of such chips as small as possible is an important factor in reducing the production cost. In particular, data driving integrated circuit chips are more expensive than gate driving circuit chips, and therefore, the number of data driving integrated circuit chips needs to be further reduced.

That is, in the odd-numbered pixel row, the switching element Q located on the left side of the data lines D 1 -D m is connected to the gate lines G 1 , G 5 , G 9 ,...
As described above, the switching element Q formed in each pixel can be more easily connected to the connected data lines D 1 -D m or the dummy lines L1 and L2, that is, the connection length can be as short as possible. Formed in position. Therefore, in the arrangement shown in FIG. 3, the position of the switching element Q changes every pixel row. On the other hand, the formation positions of the switching elements Q of the pixels located in the even rows are opposite to the formation positions of the adjacent pixel rows. That is, the right side of the even-numbered pixels located in the left side of the pixel pair in the row data lines (D 1 -D m) is formed on the switching element (Q) at the bottom left, and the data lines (D 1 -D m) The switching element Q is formed in the upper left portion of the pixel.
When the connection between the
The arrangement shown in FIG. 3 is just one example, and the connection between the

The
The display operation of such a liquid crystal display device will now be described in detail.
The
For example, a gate control signal (CONT1) includes a gate-on voltage (V on) the scan starts indicating the start of output of a signal (STV) and a gate-on voltage (V on) at least one clock signal for controlling the output time and the output voltage of the Include.
The data control signal CONT2 includes a horizontal synchronization start signal STH indicating the start of transmission of the image data DAT, a load signal TP for applying a corresponding data voltage to the data lines D 1 -D m , and a common voltage ( V inverted signal (RVS), data clock signal (HCLK), etc. to invert the polarity of the data voltage for the com (hereinafter referred to as "polarity of the data voltage by reducing the polarity of the data voltage for the common voltage"), etc. do.
The
The
The difference between the data voltage applied to the pixel and the common voltage V com is shown as the charging voltage of the liquid crystal capacitor C LC , that is, the pixel voltage. The arrangement of the liquid crystal molecules varies depending on the magnitude of the pixel voltage, thereby changing the polarization of light passing through the
In addition to the frame inversion, the
Referring to FIG. 3 again, an inversion form according to an embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail.
In FIG. 3, the driver inversion is a column inversion, and the data voltage flowing in one data line is always the same polarity, the data voltage flowing in two neighboring data lines is the opposite polarity, and the apparent inversion is 1 × 2 dot inversion.
As such, when the apparent inversion causes the dot inversion, the difference in the luminance due to the kickback voltage appears when the pixel voltage is positive and negative, and thus the vertical line defect is reduced.
Next, a liquid crystal display according to another exemplary embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIG. 8.

The pixel arrangement shown in FIG. 8 is also similar to the pixel arrangement shown in FIG. That is, a pair of gate lines are disposed above and below the
In addition, the switching elements Q connected to the pair of
In addition, a plurality of terminal lines extending from the data lines D p and D p + 1 and connected to the switching element Q are present between two adjacent gate lines.
However, the position of the switching element Q connected to each
The arrangement shown in FIG. 8 will be described in detail. A pair of pixels located between two adjacent data lines D p and D p + 1 and adjacent in a row direction (hereinafter referred to as “unit pixel pairs”) The switching elements Q of are connected to the same data lines D p and D p + 1 . In addition, a pair of pixels adjacent in the column direction are connected to different data lines D p and D p + 1 , and the switching elements Q are located on opposite sides. When one pixel row is viewed, a unit pixel pair having the same structure is repeated. As a result, the pixel array of the 2x1 matrix structure is repeatedly arranged in the row direction and the column direction.
Next, the structure of the thin film transistor array panel for the liquid crystal display device having the pixel arrangement of FIG. 8 will be described in detail with reference to FIG. 9. FIG. 9 is a layout view of a thin film transistor array panel for a liquid crystal display device having the pixel array shown in FIG. 8.
Referring to FIG. 9, the structure of the thin film

However, in FIG. 9, in addition to the
In the case of the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 8 and 9, the vertical stripe phenomenon is reduced compared to the embodiment illustrated in FIGS. 4 to 7.
This will be described in detail as follows.
The distance between two
However, in the liquid crystal display device shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, when the switching element is disposed between the
By doing so, the area of the light blocking member is increased by the portion where the switching element is formed, and accordingly, the increase of the light blocking member increased due to the arrangement of the

Referring to FIG. 10, the structure of the thin film
However, in FIG. 10, the
The
In addition to the island-
In addition, in the portions of the
In addition, the
The
As the
That is, in the thin film transistor array panel illustrated in FIGS. 10 and 11, the
Accordingly, in the thin film transistor array panel illustrated in FIGS. 10 and 11, the distance between the
As shown in FIG. 12, when two
During the process of manufacturing the thin film transistor array panel, when the
The change width ΔV of the pixel voltage according to the parasitic capacitance Cdp between the
(Where ΔVg is the voltage variation of the gate line, C LC is the capacitance of the liquid crystal capacitor, and C ST is the capacitance of the storage capacitor.)
Accordingly, since the change width ΔV of the pixel voltage varies according to the sizes of the parasitic capacitances Cdp1 and Cdp2, a deviation occurs between the pixel voltages of two adjacent pixels.
However, as the storage capacitor C ST is increased by using the structures shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, the variation width ΔV of the pixel voltage decreases, thereby reducing the pixel voltage deviation of adjacent pixels. In the case of the thin film transistor array panel to which the structure is applied, the holding capacitance C ST may be increased by about 30% and the pixel voltage deviation of about 10 to 20% may be reduced as compared with the thin film transistor array panel.
In addition, as described above, the
In more detail, the
Of course, even when the mask exposing the photosensitive film for the data line moves upward or downward in the correct alignment position, each of the linear portion of the
As described above, when the position of the data line to which the switching elements are connected between adjacent pixel rows is changed, the apparent inversion may be 1 × 2 dot inversion even though the driver inversion is a column inversion method. Therefore, since the polarity of the data voltage is determined and applied from the data driver by the column inversion method, the material selection width of the data line is increased, and the manufacturing process is easy to simplify, and since the apparent inversion is dot inversion, the image quality is improved. Furthermore, since the number of data lines is reduced, the number of expensive data driving circuit chips connected thereto is also reduced, which greatly reduces the manufacturing cost of the display device.
In addition, a switching element is formed in a portion where the data line is not formed, so that the difference in the light blocking member area between the pixel electrodes in which the data line is formed and the pixel electrode in which the data line is not formed is reduced. Accordingly, the phenomenon of the vertical stripes due to the difference in display area is reduced, and the image quality of the display device is improved.
Furthermore, by forming a protrusion of the drain electrode overlapping the gate line in the opposite direction to the source electrode, the overlapping area between the gate line and the drain electrode does not change even if the data line moves to the left or right without being patterned at the correct position during the manufacturing process. Parasitic doses occurring between them remain the same. Therefore, the difference in screen brightness between shots or flickering of screens is prevented, so the deterioration of image quality due to poor stitching or flicker is reduced.
In addition, since the capacitance of the storage capacitor is increased to reduce the pixel voltage variation generated between the pixels due to the parasitic capacitance variation, the deterioration in image quality of the display device is reduced.
