Abstract
본 발명은 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치 및 그 제조 방법에 관한 것이다. 종래 광학적 실시간 지연 장치는 광섬유 선로에 브래그 격자를 형성한 후, 지연시간을 조절하기 위해 무선주파(RF) 신호가 실려있는 광신호의 파장을 가변하거나 브래그 격자가 형성된 부분을 기계적으로 변형시키는 방법을 사용하므로 파장을 가변하는 경우에는 고가의 파장가변 광원이 필요하여 비용이 높아지며, 기계적인 변형을 실시하는 경우 부피가 큰 구동부가 필요한 것은 물론이고 기계적 피로에 의해 재연성과 신뢰성이 낮은 문제점이 있었다. 이와 같은 문제점을 감안한 본 발명은 온도 변화에 따라 유효 굴절율이 변화되는 특성을 가지는 광섬유 브래그 격자의 측면을 일부 연마하여 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 형성하고, 상기 연마된 부분에 인가 전압에 따라 발열 크기가 달라지는 히터 전극을 코팅한 후, 상기 히터 전극에 인가되는 전압으로 광섬유 브래그 격자의 유효 굴절율을 가변킴으로써, 정밀한 전압 조절을 통해 입력광이 반사될때 까지의 지연시간을 결정할 수 있어 신뢰성이 높아지고, 제어가 용이하며, 크기를 줄인 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치를 낮은 비용으로 제공할 수 있는 효과가 있으며, 이러한 구조의 장치를 단일 기판 상에 집적하는 경우 배열형 실시간 지연 장치를 작은 면적에 낮은 비용으로 구현할 수 있는 효과가 있다.
Description
본 발명은 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치 및 그 제조 방법에 관한 것으로, 특히 열광학 효과를 가지는 측면 연마된 테이퍼 구조의 광섬유 브래그 격자를 이용하여 무선주파(RF)신호가 실린 광신호의 전달 시간을 제어하도록 한 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치 및 그 제조 방법에 관한 것이다.
이동통신 단말기, 무선랜, 홈네트워크, 전자상거래, 전자회의 등이 실생활에 급속히 퍼져나감에 따라 무선 통신량이 폭발적으로 증가하게 되었다. 이러한 무선통신 시스템 및 단말기의 성능은 주변의 통신 환경에 민감하게 반응하는 경우가 많기 때문에 주변 통신 환경의 변화에 대응할 수 있는 안테나 시스템에 대한 요구가 급증하게 되었다. 특히, 이동통신 단말기, 무선랜의 경우 통화 품질은 인접 사용자에 의한 통화량이나 위치 등과 같은 주변 환경에 영향을 받기 쉬우므로, 주변의 통신 환경 변화에 대응하여 우수한 통신 품질을 유지하기 위해 통신 요구에 따라 능동적으로 전파의 송수신 분포를 조절 할 수 있는 배열형 안테나가 사용되고 있다. 이러한 배열형 안테나의 경우 다수의 요소 안테나들에 인가되는 RF 신호를 차등하게 지연시킴으로써 방출되는 RF 신호빔의 지향각을 조절할 수 있으므로, 신호를 적절하게 지연시킬 수 있는 지연 장치는 배열형 안테나의 핵심 소자이다.
종래에는 이러한 지연장치를 위상 제어 방식의 전기적 스위치를 이용하기 때문에 부피와 정밀도에서 크게 불리했으나, 최근에는 광학 효과를 이용하여 이러한 실시간 지연부를 구성하고 있다.
도 1은 광학적 실시간 지연부를 이용하는 일반적인 위상 배열 안테나 시스템의 구성을 간략히 보인 것으로, 도시한 구성은 광학적 RF 실시간 지연선로를 이용한 배열형 안테나 구조이다. 도시한 바와 같이 4개의 요소 안테나(50a~50d)가 각각광학적 실시간 지연부(30a~30d)와 연결되어 있다.
상기 구조를 감안하면서 광학적으로 RF 신호의 송수신 분포를 조절하는 방법을 알아보면, 전송하고자 하는 RF 신호(fRF)를 전기 광학 변조기(10)에 인가하여 전송자(carrier)로 사용되는 광신호(fo)에 실어 상기 광 지연부(30a~30d)와 연결된 광섬유 선로(20)에 제공하면서, 상기 광 지연부(30a~30d) 각각에 설정된 지연 시간(Δτ단위)을 조절한다. 이렇게 지연된 광 신호들은 광 검출기(40a~40d)에 의해 다시 RF 신호로 복원된 후 상기 요소 안테나(50a~50d)를 구동하여 이들로부터 송수신되는 RF 신호빔의 분포를 조절할 수 있다
여기서, 상기 광 지연부(30a~30d)는 광섬유 선로(20)의 일부분에 형성된 지연선로로서, 각각 Δτ를 단위로 하는 시간 지연을 가지도록 구성되며, 이들에 의해 상기 요소 안테나(50a~50d)를 통해 송수신되는 RF 심호빔의 주사 방향이 결정된다.
상기와 같은 광 지연부(30a~30d)는 특정한 광파장의 신호만을 반사시키는 특성을 가지는 광섬유 브래그 격자(fiber bragg grating)를 이용하는 것이 일반적인데, 기존의 방법은 광섬유 자체에 브래그 격자 구조를 도입한 형태로 사용된다. 즉, 고정된 파장에 대응하는 브래그 격자 구조를 광 선로에 형성하여 인가되는 파장이 소정의 위치에서 반사되도록 하고, 이렇게 반사되는 광을 다시 받아들여 지연이 발생하도록 하는 방식이다.
상기 종래의 브래그 격자 구조를 이용하는 지연 선로는 크게 두가지 방법으로 사용되는데, 하나는 광신호의 진행 방향으로 격자의 주기가 변하여 각 지점에서 반사되는 광파장이 달라지는 쳐핑된 브래그 격자(Chirped fiber bragg grating)를 이용하는 것이다. 이는 입력되는 광파장을 변화시킴으로써 상기 광파장이 브래그 격자 구조로 진행하다가 격자 구조에 의해 반사되는 반사 지점을 변경시켜 상기 광파장에 실린 RF 신호의 지연 시간을 조절하는 방식이다. 이는 RF 신호가 실리는 광신호의 파장을 변화시켜 상기 브래그 격자에서 상기 광 신호가 반사되는 위치를 조절하는 것으로 지연 시간을 변화시키기 때문에 파장 가변 광원이 필수적이다. 그러나 이러한 파장 가변 광원은 상당히 고가이므로 제조 비용이 높아지는 문제점이 있었다.
다른 방법은, 파장을 가변시키는 방법이 아니라, 브래그 격자가 형성된 선로를 물리적으로 변형(선로를 휘거나 누르는 등)시켜 격자의 구조를 가변함으로써 반사되는 광신호의 지연시간을 조절하는 방법인데, 이는 기계적인 움직임이 필요하므로 지연부의 부피가 커지고 기계적인 피로에 의해 재현성 및 신뢰성이 낮은 문제점과 함께, 연속적으로 고속 구동이 어렵다는 문제점 또한 가지게 된다.
상기한 바와 같이 종래 광학적 실시간 지연 장치는 광섬유 선로에 브래그 격자를 형성한 후, 지연시간을 조절하기 위해 무선주파(RF) 신호가 실려있는 광신호의 파장을 가변하거나 브래그 격자가 형성된 부분을 기계적으로 변형시키는 방법을 사용하므로 파장을 가변하는 경우에는 고가의 파장가변 광원이 필요하여 비용이 높아지며, 기계적인 변형을 실시하는 경우 부피가 큰 구동부가 필요한 것은 물론이고 기계적 피로에 의해 재연성과 신뢰성이 낮은 문제점이 있었다.
상기와 같은 문제점을 감안한 본 발명은 온도 변화에 따라 유효 굴절율이 변화되는 특성을 가지는 광섬유 브래그 격자의 측면을 일부 연마하여 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 형성하고, 상기 연마된 부분에 인가 전압에 따라 발열 크기가 달라지는 히터 전극을 코팅한 후, 상기 히터 전극에 인가되는 전압으로 광섬유 브래그 격자의 유효 굴절율을 가변시키도록 한 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치 및 그 제조 방법을 제공하는데 그 목적이 있다.
상기와 같은 목적을 달성하기위한 본 발명은, 열광학 특성을 가지는 균일 브래그 격자가 일부에 형성된 광섬유 코어층과; 상기 코어층을 감싸면서 소정의 곡률 반경으로 휘어지며, 휘어진 부분 중에서 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유 코어층이 위치된 부분을 포함한 일부가 제거됨으로써 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 가지는 광섬유 클래딩층과; 상기 연마된 광섬유 클래딩층 상에 형성되어 상기 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유 코어층과의 이격 거리가 점진적으로 변화되는 히터 전극을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
또한, 본 발명은 기판에 소정의 곡률 반경을 가지는 깊이로 그루브를 형성하는 단계와; 상기 형성된 그루부에 균일 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유를 삽입한 후, 상기 그루브를 접착 물질로 매워 상기 광섬유를 휘면서 고정시키는 단계와; 상기 고정된 광섬유의 일부와 접착 물질 및 기판의 일부를 연마하여 상기 균일 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유가 비대칭 테이퍼 구조가 되도록 하는 단계와; 상기 연마된 광섬유 상부에 히터 전극을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 한다.
상기와 같은 방법으로 실시되는 본 발명의 실시예들을 첨부한 도면들을 참조하여 상세히 설명하면 다음과 같다.
도 2는 본 발명 일 실시예의 구조를 보이는 개념도로서, 열광학 광섬유 균일 브래그 격자를 일부 연마하여 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 형성한 후, 연마된 부분에 히터 전극을 형성한 구조룰 보인 것이다.
도시된 바와 같이 광섬유 코어층(110)의 일부 영역에는 균일 브래그 격자(길이 L)(120)가 형성되어 있으며, 상기 코어층(110)을 감싸고 있는 광섬유 클래딩층(100)은 상기 균일 브래그 격자(120)가 시작되는 부분을 중심으로 휘어진 후, 그 일부가 연마되어 상기 균일 브래그 격자(120)가 형성된 광섬유 코어층(110) 상부의 광섬유 클래딩층(100)의 두께는 격자 방향을 따라 점진적으로 변화하는 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 가진다. 그리고, 그 상부에 금속층이 코팅되어 히터 전극(130)이 형성된다. 상기 광섬유 클래딩층(130)의 테이퍼 구조는 도시된 각 부분의 절단 단면도를 통해 확실하게 확인할 수 있는데, 브래그 격자(120)가 시작되는 부분(z=0)의 단면도에서 코어층(110)과 히터 전극(130)과의 거리는 대단히 가까우며, 브래그 격자(120)가 끝나는 부분(z=L)과 히터 전극(130)과의 거리는 대단히 멀다. 따라서, 상기 히터 전극(130)에 전압을 인가하여 열을 발생시키면 상기 히터 전극(130)과 광섬유 코어층(110)에 형성된 브래그 격자(120) 사이의 거리에 따라 브래그 격자(120)의 유효 굴절율 변화 정도가 가변되게 된다.
여기서, 상기 형성된 본 발명 일 실시예의 구조가 동작하는 방식을 설명하면, RF 신호가 포함된 소정 파장의 광신호가 상기 광섬유의 코어층(110)을 통해 좌측으로부터 인가되면, 상기 광신호는 광섬유 코어층(110)의 브래그 격자(120) 부분을 통과하는 중에 소정 위치에서 반사가 일어나 인가된 방향으로 반사되어 되돌아가게 된다. 그 반사 시간이 지연 시간이 되는 것이다. 현재 사용되는 광섬유 브래그 격자의 경우 균일 브래그 격자를 사용하는 경우 입력되는 광파장에 따라 반사 위치가 고정되어 있지만(그래서 파장 가변 광원이 필요함), 본 발명에서는 상기 히터 전극(130)에 가하는 전압에 따라 코어층(110)에 형성된 균일 브래그 격자(130)의 유효 굴절율이 차등한 비율(히터 전극과 브래그 격자 사이의 거리가 차등하므로)로 가변되게 되어 실질적으로는 쳐핑된 브래그 격자처럼 동작하게 된다. 즉, 반사되는 광파장은 하나가 아니라 광섬유 클래딩층의 두께에 따라 점진적으로 증가하게 되며, 반사되는 광파장의 분포가 히터 전극의 온도에 따라 변화하게 된다.
실제, 상기와 같은 구조의 광섬유 브래그 격자(120)에 의해 반사되는 광신호의 파장은 다음과 같은 식을 통해 얻을 수 있다.
여기서, neff는 광섬유 격자의 유효 굴절율이고, Λg는 격자의 주기이다.
도 3은 길이가 L인 광섬유 격자를 가진 광섬유의 측면을 연마하여 도 2와 같은 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 만들고 히터 전극을 형성한 경우 상기 히터 전극의 온도(T)에 따른 인가 광파장의 반사위치 분포도이다. 이를 통해 인가되는 여러 파장의 광신호에 대한 반사 위치를 알 수 있으므로, 히터 전극에 인가하는 전압을 조절하여 광신호의 지연시간을 조절할 수 있다.
도시한 바와 같이 소정의 광파장(λs)을 인가한 경우 히터 전극의 온도 변화(즉, 히터 전극에 가하는 전압)에 따른 반사 위치(z)가 도시되어 있다. 여기서, λB는 격자 내에서 온도 변화가 없을 경우의 반사 광파장이다.
파장이 λs인 광신호를 입력으로 사용한 경우, 온도가 T1이라면 반사되는 위치는 z1이 되고, 온도가 Tn 이라면 반사되는 위치는 zn이 된다. 즉, 가해지는 열에 의해 온도가 높아질 수록 반사되는 위치가 더 얕아져, 지연 시간이 짧아지게 된다. 따라서, 히터 전극에 인가되는 전압을 조절하여 제공되는 열의 크기를 조절함으로써 인가되는 광이 반사되는 위치를 조절할 수 있으며, 그에 따라 입력되는 광신호가 반사될때 까지의 지연 시간을 비교적 간단한 전압 조절만으로 실현할 수 있다.
도 4a 내지 도 4d는 본 발명 일 실시예의 제조 과정을 보인 수순 단면도로서, 도시한 바와 같이 전술한 비대칭 테이퍼 구조의 광섬유 브래그 격자를 기판 상에 직접 형성할 수 있도록 한 것으로, 단일 광 지연 장치를 형성할 수도 있으나 하나의 기판 상에 여러개의 광 지연 장치를 동시에 집적하게 되면 배열형 실시간 지연장치를 구성할 수 있다. 또한, 여러 반도체 소자들을 동일 기판 상에 동시에 형성할 수 있어 배열형 안테나의 크기를 대폭 줄일 수도 있다.
먼저, 도 4a에 도시한 바와 같이 석영, 실리콘, 유리등과 같은 재료로 이루어진 기판(200)에 소정의 곡률 반경을 가지는 깊이로 홈을 형성하여 일종의 그루브(210)를 만든다.
그리고, 도 4b에 도시한 바와 같이 상기 형성된 그루브(210)에 균일 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유(100)를 삽입한 후, 에폭시 등의 접착 물질(220)로 상기 홈을 채워 광섬유(100)를 고정시킨다.
그리고, 도 4c에 도시한 바와 같이 상기 형성된 구조물의 상부를 연마하여 브래그 격자가 형성된 내부 코어 부분을 감싸는 광섬유(100)의 외부 클래딩층을 일부 제거한다. 그로인해, 상기 광섬유(100) 내부의 브래그 격자 상부에 위치한 클래딩층의 두께는 점진적으로 변화하게 된다.
그리고, 도 4d에 도시한 바와 같이 상기 연마된 광섬유(100)의 클래딩층 상부 일부(브래그 격자가 형성된 부분을 포괄하는 영역)에 금속 코팅을 통한 히터 전극(130)을 형성한다.
전술한 방법을 통해 기존에 사용하던 균일 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유 실시간 지연 장치를 비교적 용이한 공정을 통해 가공한 후, 히터 전극을 더 형성하고, 상기 히터 전극에 가하는 전압을 제어함으로써 입력되는 광의 반사 지연 시간을 조절할 수 있게 된다.
상기한 바와 같이 본 발명 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치 및 그 제조 방법은 온도 변화에 따라 유효 굴절율이 변화되는 특성을 가지는 광섬유 브래그 격자의 측면을 일부 연마하여 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 형성하고, 상기 연마된 부분에 인가 전압에 따라 발열 크기가 달라지는 히터 전극을 코팅한 후, 상기 히터 전극에 인가되는 전압으로 광섬유 브래그 격자의 유효 굴절율을 가변킴으로써, 정밀한 전압 조절을 통해 입력광이 반사될때 까지의 지연시간을 결정할 수 있어 신뢰성이 높아지고, 제어가 용이하며, 크기를 줄인 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치를 낮은 비용으로 제공할 수 있는 효과가 있으며, 이러한 구조의 장치를 단일 기판 상에 집적하는 경우 배열형 실시간 지연 장치를 작은 면적에 낮은 비용으로 구현할 수 있는 효과가 있다.

Claims (3)
- 열광학 특성을 가지는 균일 브래그 격자가 일부에 형성된 광섬유 코어층과; 상기 코어층을 감싸면서 소정의 곡률 반경으로 휘어지며, 휘어진 부분 중에서 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유 코어층이 위치된 부분을 포함한 일부가 제거됨으로써 비대칭 테이퍼 구조를 가지는 광섬유 클래딩층과; 상기 연마된 광섬유 클래딩층 상에 형성되어 상기 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유 코어층과의 이격 거리가 점진적으로 변화되는 히터 전극을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치.
- 제 1항에 있어서, 상기 광섬유 코어층은 실리카 재질을 포함한, 열광학 특성을 가지는 광학 물질로 형성된 것을 특징으로 하는 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치.
- 기판에 소정의 곡률 반경을 가지는 깊이로 그루브를 형성하는 단계와; 상기 형성된 그루부에 균일 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유를 삽입한 후, 상기 그루부를 접착 물질로 매워 상기 광섬유를 휘면서 고정시키는 단계와; 상기 고정된 광섬유의 일부와 접착 물질 및 기판의 일부를 연마하여 상기 균일 브래그 격자가 형성된 광섬유가 비대칭 테이퍼 구조가 되도록 하는 단계와; 상기 연마된 광섬유 상부에 히터 전극을 형성하는 단계를 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 집적광학형 실시간 지연 장치 제조 방법.
