타이어 산업의 초창기에는 타이어 보강재로서 면(cotton)이 일반적으로 사용되었으나 1920년대에는 합성 셀룰로오스 섬유인 레이온이 대신 사용되기 시작하였고, 2차 세계대전 이후로는 완전히 레이온으로 대체되었다. 유럽에서는 아직도 레이온이 승용차용 타이어 보강재로 주로 사용되고 있으나 기타 지역의 경우 PET가 주로 사용되고 있다. 현재는 레이온 생산시 발생하는 환경문제로 인해 레이온을 대체하기 위한 많은 연구가 진행되고 있으며, 이를 위해 레이온과 유사한 구조안정성을 갖는 많은 PET 코드들이 개발되었다. 그러나 일부 초고속 주행용 타이어의 경우에는 고속주행시 발생하는 열에 의해 PET 코드가 견뎌내지 못하므로 열안정성이 우수한 레이온 코드를 적용하고 있다. 그러나 레이온의 경우 열안정성은 우수하지만 PET에 비해 강력성이 떨어지며 원재료 생산시 공정상의 문제로 인하여 환경문제에 심각한 해를 끼친다.In the early days of the tire industry, cotton was commonly used as a tire reinforcement, but in the 1920s, synthetic cellulose fibers, rayon, began to be used instead, and after World War II they were completely replaced by rayon.
