종래에 신발금형을 제작하는 방법으로는 대체적으로 기계가공법과 주물로 주조하는 방법 및 방전가공방법 등이 있었으나 기계가공방법은 섬세한 부분은 정밀도가 있는 장비로도 작업이 난이 하여 수작업으로 마무리를 해야 하는 번거로움이 있었으며 주물로 주조하는 경우에는 2개의 주물을 만들어 상,하로 절삭가공하여 금형을 만들었으므로 정밀도가 떨어지고 주조 결함의 원인인 수축, 기포 등으로 뒤틀림 현상이 발생하여 제품의 불량율의 증가와 고열, 분진, 소음 등 작업환경이 취약하였으며, 방전가공방법인 경우에는 카본이나 구리로 형상을 만들어 방전을 할 때에 마모성이 많고 특히 깊은 곳은 정밀 제작이 불가능하고 내구성이 없으며 가공비와 시간이 많이 소요되는 등의 폐단이 있었다.Conventionally, as a method of manufacturing shoe molds, there were a machining method, a casting method, and an electric discharge method.
