Description
An embodiment of the present invention relates to a display device and an optical compensation method thereof.
As the information technology is developed, the market of display devices, which is a connection medium between users and information, is getting larger. Accordingly, the use of display devices such as an organic light emitting display (OLED), a liquid crystal display (LCD), and a plasma display panel (PDP) is increasing.
Some of the above-described display devices, for example, a liquid crystal display device and an organic light emitting display device, include a display panel including a plurality of sub-pixels arranged in a matrix form and a driver for driving the display panel. The driving unit includes a scan driver for supplying a scan signal to the display panel, and a data driver for supplying a data signal to the display panel.
When a scan signal, a data signal, or the like is supplied to a display panel including sub-pixels arranged in a matrix form, the selected sub-pixel emits light so that an image can be displayed.
Since the white color of the display panel differs depending on the characteristic deviation from the manufacturing process, an optical compensation process is required to compensate the white color. Since the data used in the optical compensation has different values for each display panel, the data driver uses the optical compensation data corresponding to the luminance provided through the memory in which the optical compensation value is stored.
Since the conventional optical compensation scheme sets different gamma setting values through optical compensation for each brightness level, the number of optical compensation times as well as the size of a memory for storing the same increases as the number of provided luminance changes increases. When such a problem requires a large amount of luminance change level, a method of reducing optical compensation data is required because a method of replacing the luminance change level is extremely limited.
According to an embodiment of the present invention for solving the problems of the background art described above, since the same gamma setting value is applied in the resolution of the extended luminance section, the area within the white deviation required by the customer is divided into sections, And to provide a display device and an optical compensation method thereof that can reduce the burden of increasing the size of the data driver as well as reducing the size of the memory used at the time of the display.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, an instruction value output unit outputs an instruction value corresponding to a luminance change signal supplied from the outside; A compensation data output unit for outputting compensation data of one of optical compensation data classified into N (N is an integer of 4 or more) corresponding to the indication value supplied from the indication value output unit; A gamma setting unit for changing a predetermined gamma based on the compensation data output from the compensation data output unit; And a display panel for displaying an image based on the data signal corresponding to the gamma voltage value changed by the gamma setting unit.
The gamma setting unit may change the predetermined gamma for each luminance interval based on the compensation data, and the gamma voltage values included in the same luminance interval may have the same gamma setting value.
The indication value output unit includes an indication value storage unit for storing threshold values for defining optical compensation data classified into N for each luminance interval, an indication value storage unit for comparing the luminance change signal and the threshold value, and outputting an indication value And a determination unit.

The compensation data output unit may include a compensation data storage unit for storing optical compensation data classified into N and a compensation data determination unit for outputting compensation data of one of N optical compensation data corresponding to the indication value.
The optical compensation data may be defined as four intervals so as to have the same gamma setting value for the same luminance interval.
The compensation data output unit outputs the compensation data of the first section if the bit value of the luminance change signal is greater than or equal to 00h and less than or equal to the first threshold value stored in the indication value output section, And outputs the compensation data of the second section if the bit value of the luminance change signal is larger than the second threshold value and the third threshold value stored in the indication value output section is less than or equal to the second threshold value stored in the indication value output section, And if the bit value of the luminance change signal is larger than the third threshold value and smaller than or equal to FFh, the compensation data of the fourth section can be outputted.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an image processing apparatus including: an instruction value output step of outputting an instruction value corresponding to a luminance change signal supplied from the outside; A compensation data output step of outputting one of the optical compensation data divided into N (N is an integer of 4 or more) corresponding to the indication value; A gamma changing step of changing a predetermined gamma based on the output compensation data; And a video display step of displaying an image based on the data signal corresponding to the changed gamma.
The indicator values include three threshold values for dividing the critical point for each luminance interval of the optical compensation data so that the optical compensation data divided into N is defined as four luminance intervals, and the optical compensation data includes the same gamma setting value Lt; / RTI >
The compensation data output step may output the compensation data of the first section if the bit value of the luminance change signal is greater than or equal to 00h and less than or equal to the first threshold value and if the bit value of the luminance change signal is greater than the first threshold value, And outputs the compensation data of the third section if the bit value of the luminance change signal is greater than or equal to the second threshold value and equal to or less than the third threshold value, The compensation data of the fourth section can be outputted when the bit value of the fourth section is larger than the third threshold value and equal to or smaller than FFh.
Since the same gamma setting value is applied in the resolution of the extended luminance section, the embodiment of the present invention reduces the size of the memory used for optical compensation by dividing the area within the White deviation required by the customer into sections, Of course, the burden of increasing the size of the data driver can be eliminated. Also, the range of the minimum to maximum gamma data can be controlled by reflecting the characteristics of the display device so that the resolution of the minimum to maximum luminance interval requested by the customer is increased. In addition, there is an effect that optical compensation can be performed on a threshold point luminance of a region divided by intervals. In addition, since the same gamma setting value is applied to each of the brightness levels, it is possible to prevent an increase in memory for storing optical compensation data even if a large luminance change level is required.

The instruction

The indication
The instruction
The compensation

The compensation
The
The gamma
The gamma
According to the above configuration, the compensation
Hereinafter, in order to facilitate understanding of the embodiment, it is explained that the same gamma setting value is applied within a specific luminance interval based on a specific luminance change signal.
FIG. 8 is a gamma curve for explaining that the gamma voltage value has the same gamma setting value based on the compensation data of the second section, and FIG. 9 is a table for explaining the memory usage amount of the embodiment as compared with the comparative example.
8 shows a case where the bit value of the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] supplied from the outside is larger than the first threshold
4 to 8, when the brightness change signal DBV [7: 0] is supplied, the indication
The bit value of the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is smaller than the first threshold
Since the indication value output from the indication
Since the compensation data output from the compensation
In an embodiment, a display device that provides an extended brightness change level as described above divides an expanded brightness level into sections, applies the same gamma setting values to the same sections, and stores the optical compensation data in a memory (OTP) assignment.
As shown in Fig. 9, in the comparative example, dozens of optical compensation data are required for each brightness level and brightness by an extended brightness level. This is because a plurality of brightness levels are expressed by a plurality of brightness levels. On the other hand, in the embodiment, since the extended brightness level is divided into sections and the same value is applied to each section, at least four optical compensation data are sufficient for each brightness level and brightness. In order to limit the brightness level to four sections as in the embodiment, it is necessary to define the section through the gray level measurement so as to minimize the influence of the decrease in the brightness level. However, if the interval is defined through the measurement of each group as described above, there is an advantage that the representative can be provided corresponding to the characteristic of each display panel. Accordingly, the embodiment can reduce the size of the memory used in the optical compensation, as well as the burden of increasing the size of the data driver.

As shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, the optical compensation method of the display device according to the embodiment of the present invention is performed as follows.
The luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is input from the outside, for example, by the user (S110). Here, the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is input through the OSD, the remote controller, or the like.
The instruction value is output corresponding to the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] (S120). The indication value used in the indication value output step S120 is determined by the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] and the threshold values (
And outputs compensation data of one of optical compensation data (
The predetermined gamma is changed based on the output compensation data (S140). The gamma preset by the gamma changing step S140 is changed so that the same luminance interval has the same gamma setting value.
And displays the image based on the data signal corresponding to the changed gamma (S150). An image is displayed on the display panel by the image display step S150.
In the above description, the indication value is obtained by dividing the critical point for each luminance section of the optical compensation data (
In the above description, the main flow of the optical compensation method according to the compensation data output step (S130) will be described below.
If the bit value of the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is greater than or equal to 00h and smaller than or equal to the first threshold
Otherwise, if the bit value of the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is greater than the first threshold
On the other hand, if the bit value of the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is greater than the second threshold
Otherwise, if the bit value of the luminance change signal DBV [7: 0] is greater than the third threshold
According to the optical compensation method described above, the embodiment can control the range of the minimum to maximum gamma data by reflecting the characteristic of the display device so that the resolution of the minimum to maximum luminance interval requested by the customer is increased. In addition, since the same gamma setting value is applied in the resolution of the extended luminance section, it is possible to divide the area within the White deviation required by the customer into sections. In addition, it is possible to perform optical compensation with respect to the threshold point luminance of the region divided by intervals. In addition, since the same gamma setting value is applied to each of the brightness levels, it is possible to prevent an increase in memory for storing optical compensation data even if a large luminance change level is required.
