Abstract
본 발명은 광도파관으로 이루어진 광결합기 센서 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것이다. 좀 더 구체적으로, 본 발명은 미소한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 감지할 수 있도록 이동 광도파관 및 고정 광도파관을 포함하는 광결합기 센서 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는 기판(1) 상에 형성된 고정 광도파관(2); 및, 기판(1) 상에 형성된 캔틸레버(3)에 연계되며 전기한 고정 광도파광(2)과 일정간격 이격형성되어 외력에 의해 상하로 이동할 수 있는 이동 광도파관(4)으로 구성된다. 또한, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서 제조방법은 기판 상에 클래딩층(21)을 형성하고 클래딩층(21) 상에 코어층(22)을 형성하는 과정; 전기한 코어층(22)을 삭각하여 고정 광도파관(2)을 형성하는 과정; 전기항 클래딩층(21) 및 고정 광도파관(2) 상에 지지층(23)을 형성하는 과정; 전기한 지지층(23) 상에 캔틸레버(3) 및 캔틸레버(3)와 연계된 이동 광도파관(4)을 형성하는 과정; 및, 전기한 지지층(23)을 선택적 식각하여 캔틸레버 지지판(5)을 형성하는 과정을 포함한다. 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는 미소한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 측정 및 감지할 수 있으며, 본 발명에 의해 전기한 광결합기 센서를 간단한 과정에 의해 경제적으로 제조할 수 있다.

본 발명은 광도파관으로 이루어진 광결합기 센서 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것이다. 좀 더 구체적으로, 본 발명은 미소한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 감지할 수 있도록 이동 광도파관 및 고정 광도파관을 포함하는 광결합기 센서 및 그의 제조방법에 관한 것이다.
질량 또는 변위 등의 미세한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 감지 및 측정하기 위하여 종래에는 주로 캐패시턴스(capacitance)를 이용한 센서가 사용되어 왔으며, 이와 관련된 종래의 기술에 대하여는 다음과 같은 문헌에 개시되어 있다:
체(S. M. Sze)가 저술한 문헌에는 캐패시터(capacitor)로 이루어진 2개의 전극으로 구성된 센서에 대하여 개시되어 있다. 전기한 센서에서는 캐피시턴스가 캐패시터의 양 전극 사이의 거리에 반비례한다는 것을 이용하여 임의의 물리량을 캐피시터의 양 전극 사이의 거리로 변환시키고 캐피시터의 커패시턴스를 측정함으로써, 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 감지하였다[참조 : S. M. Sze, Semiconductor Sensors, 191(1994)].
그러나, 전기한 종래의 센서는 캐패시턴스가 캐패시터의 양 전극 사이의 거리에 반비례한다는 관계를 이용하여 물리량을 측정하였기 때문에, 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 측정할 수 없으므로, 고정밀도로 물리량을 측정하기 위한 센서로 사용하기에는 한계를 지니고 있었다.
결국, 본 발명의 주된 목적은 미세한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 감지할 수 있는 광결합기(photocoupler) 센서를 제공함에 있다.
본 발명의 또 다른 목적은 전기한 광결합기 센서를 간단한 과정에 의해 경제적으로 제조할 수 있는 광결합기 센서의 제조방법을 제공함에 있다.
본 발명자들은 광결합기의 출력강도가 2개의 광도파관 사이의 거리에 대하여 지수적으로 주파수가 변하는 사인함수(sinusoidal) 관계에 있으며, 광결합기의 출력강도가 2개의 광도파관 사이의 거리에 대하여 매우 민감하게 변화한다는 것을 발견하고, 이를 응용하여 미세한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 감지 및 측정할 수 있는 광결합기 센서를 개발하기 위하여 예의 연구를 거듭한 결과, 본 발명을 완성하기에 이르렀다.
전기한 목적을 달성하는 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는,
기판 상에 형성된 고정 광도파관; 및,
기판 상에 형성된 캔틸레버(cantilever)에 연계되며 전기한 고정 광도파광과 일정간격 이격형성되어 외력에 의해 상하로 이동할 수 있는 이동 광도파관으로 구성된다.
이때, 전기한 광결합기 센서는 이동 광도파관의 상부에 표면의 굴곡측정을 위한 팁(tip)을 추가로 형성할 수 있다.
또한, 전기한 광결합기 센서는 이동 광도파관의 상부에 가속도 및 만유인력측정을 위한 고질량의 증착물을 추가로 형성할 수 있다.
또한, 전기한 광결합기 센서는 이동 광도파관의 상부에 온도변화를 측정하기 위한 바이메탈(bimetal)을 추가로 형성할 수 있다.
아울러, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서 제조방법은,
기판 상에 클래딩층(cladding layer)을 형성하고 클래딩층 상에 코어층(core layer)을 형성하는 과정;
전기한 코어층을 식각하여 고정 광도파관을 형성하는 과정;
전기한 클래딩층 및 고정 광도파곤 상에 지지층을 형성하는 과정;
전기한 지지층 상에 캔틸레버 및 캔틸레버와 연계된 이동 광도파관을 형성하는 과정 ; 및,
전기한 지지층을 선택적 식각하여 캔틸레버 지지판을 형성하는 과정을 포함한다.
이때, 전기한 지지층의 선택적 식각을 수행할 수 있도록, 전기한 지지층과 캔틸레버, 광도파관 및 클래딩층을 식각속도가 서로다른 Si-SiO2또는 GaAs-AlGaAs로 각각 형성하는 것이 바람직하다.
이하, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서의 바람직한 실시예 및 그의 제조 방법을 첨부도면을 참조하여 보다 상세히 설명한다.
제1(a) 도 및 제1(b)도는 각각 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 광결합기 센서에 대한 개략적인 사시도 및 정면도로서, 도시된 바와 같이, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는 기판(1) 상에 형성된 고정 광도파관(2); 및, 기판(1) 상에 형성된 캔틸레버(3)에 연계되어 전기한 고정 광도파관(2)과 일정간격 이격형성되어 외력에 의해 상하로 이동할 수 있는 이동 광도파관(4)으로 구성된다. 이대, 전기한 고정 광도파관(2) 및 이동 광도파관(4)은 하나의 광겨합기를 형성하게 되며, 전기한 캔틸레버(3)는 기판(1)에 형성된 캔틸레버 지지판(5) 상에 지지되게 된다.
전기한 고정 광도파관(2)을 통하여 광의 입사, 전송 및 방출이 이루어지게 되며, 고정 광도파관(2)을 통하여 방출된 빛의 출력강도를 감지하기 위하여 고정 광도파관(2)의 출구에 인접하여 광감지기(미도시)가 설치된다.
전술한 본 발명의 광결합기 센서에서는, 캔틸레버(3)에 연계된 이동 광결합기(4)에 외부로 부터의 힘이 가해지게 되면, 이동 광도파관(4)이 상하로 움직이게 된다. 이때, 빛을 고정 광도파관(2)에 입사시키면, 빛이 고정 광도파관(2)을 통하여 전송되다가 이동 광도파관(4) 하부의 고정 광도파관(2) 부위에서 광결합(photocoupling)이 발생하게 되며, 이동 광도파관(4)이 끝나는 위치의 고정 광도파관(2)을 통하는 빛은 약간의 광손시을 제외하고는 별다른 섭동없이 고정 광도파관(2)의 끝단까지 전송되게 된다. 고정 광도파관(2)을 통해 전송된 빛은 광감지기에 의해 빛의 강도가 감지되게 된다.
이때, 고정 광도파관(2)으로부터 방출된 빛의 강도는 전기 광결합의 정도에 영향을 받으며, 이러한 광결합은 고정 광도파관(2) 및 이동 광도파관(4) 사이의 거리에 매우 민감하게 변화하므로, 고정 광도파관(2)의 출구에 인접하여 설치된 광감지기(미도시)에 의해 감지된 빛의 강도를 측정하게 되면, 결국, 캔틸레버상에 가해진 외력의 크기를 고감도로 감지할 수 있게 된다.
제 2도는 본 발명의 광결합기 센서의 2개의 광도파관(2, 4) 사이에 거리에 따른 빛의 출력강도를 나타낸 그래프로서, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서에서는 빛의 출력강도가 두 광도파관(2, 4) 사이의 거리에 대해 지수함수적으로 주파수가 변하는 사인함수 관계에 있음을 알 수 있다. 따라서, 임의의 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 이동 광도파관(4)을 상하로 움직일 수 있는 힘으로 변환시키게 되면, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서로부터 출력된 빛의 강도를 측정함으로써, 고감도로 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 간단히 측정할 수 있게 된다.
제3도는 제1도에 도시된 본 발명의 센서를 이용하여 물체의 무게를 측정하는 응용예를 나타낸 개략도로서, 도시된 바와 같이, 이동 광도파관(4) 상에 임의의 물체(11)를 올려놓고 이동 광도파관(4)의 상하이동에 따른 고정 광도파관(2)을 통과한 빛의 강도를 측정함으로써, 물체(11)의 무게 및 무게변화를 고감도로측정할 수 있게 된다.
제4(a)도는 본 발명의 광결합기 센서에 대한 다른 실시예를 나타낸 사시도로서, 광결합기 센서의 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 임의 물체의 표면에 대한 골곡측정을 위하여 팁(12)를 추가로 형성한다. 전기한 광결합기 센서는 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 현성된 팁(12)에 의해 임의 물체의 표면 굴곡상태를 감지하거나, 임의의 물체를 이동 광도파관(4)의 팁(12)에 연결하여 그 물체의 변위를 감지할 수 있다. 이러한 형태의 광결합기 센서는 원자적 힘 현미경(atomic force microscope, ATM) 등에 사용될 수 있다.
제4(b)도는 본 발명의 광결합기 센서에 대한 또 다른 실시예를 나타낸 사시도로서, 광결합기 센서의 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 가속도 및 만유인력측정을 위하여 고질량의 증착물(13)을 증착형성한다. 전기한 광결합기 센서에서는, 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 형성된 증착물(13)이 겪는 가속도 및 만유인력에 의해 이동 광도파관(4)이 상하로 움직이는 것을 이용하여 가속도 및 만유인력을 감지할 수 있다.
제4(c)도는 본 발명의 광결합기 센서에 대한 또 다른 실시예를 나타낸 사시도로서, 광결합기 센서의 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 온도변화 측정을 위하여 바이메탈(14)을 부설한다. 전기한 광결합기 센서에서는, 외부의 온도변화에 의해 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 형성된 바이메탈이 휘게되고, 그것으로 인해 고정 광도파관(2)이 이동하게 되어 온도변화를 고감도로 감지할 수 있게 된다.
제5(a)도 내지 제5(f)도는 전기한 본 발명의 광결합기 센서를 제조하는 과정을 개략적으로 나타낸 제조과정도로서, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는 제5(a)도와 같이, 기판(20) 상에 클래딩층(21)을 형성하고, 제5(b)도와 같이, 클래딩층(21) 상에 코어층(22)을 형성하고, 제5(c)도와 같이, 전기한 코어층(22)을 식각하여 고정 광도파관(2)을 형성한 다음, 제5(d)도와 같이, 전기한 클래딩층(21) 및 고정 광도파관(2) 상에 지지층(23)을 형성하고, 제5(e)도와 같이, 전기한 지지층(23) 상에 캔틸레버(3) 및 캔틸레버(3)와 연계된 이동 광도파관(4)을 형성한 후, 제 5(f)도와 같이, 전기한 지지층(23)을 선택적 식각하여 캔틸레버 지지판(5)을 형성하여 제조된다.
이때, 전기한 지지층(23)의 선택적 식각을 수행할 수 있도록, 전기한 지지층(23)과 캔틸레버(3), 광도파관(2, 4) 및 클래딩층(21)은 식각속도가 서로 다른 Si 및 SiO2를 각각 사용하거나, GaAs-AlGaAs로 각각 사용하며, 보다 바람직하게는, 전기한 기판(20)은 실리콘, 클래딩층(21)은 실리카, 코어층(22)은 붕소가 도핑된 실리카(boron doped silica), 지지층(23)은 다결정성 실리콘(polycrystalline silicon), 캔틸레버(3) 및 이동 광도파관(4)은 시리카를 사용한다.
또한, 전기한 캔틸레버(3) 및 캔틸레버 지지판(5)은 종래의 일반적인 마이크로머시닝(micromachining)방법을 사용하여 형성할 수 있다 [참조: K. E. Petersen, IEEE Trans, Electron Devices, ED-25(10) : 1241-1250(1978)].
전술한 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는 종래의 캐패시턴스를 이용한 센서와 달리, 미소한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 측정할 수 있다.
이상에서 상세히 설명한 바와 같이, 본 발명의 광결합기 센서는 미소한 물리량 및 그의 변화량을 고감도로 측정 및 감지할 수 있으며, 본 발명에 의해 전기한 광결합기 센서를 간단한 과정에 의해 경제적으로 제조할수 있다.
Claims (7)
- 기판(1) 상에 형성된 고정 광도파관(2); 및, 기판(1) 상에 형성된 캔틸레버(3)에 연계되며 전기한 고정 광도파광(2)과 일정간격 이격형성되어 외력에 의해 상하로 이동할 수 있는 이동 광도파관(4);및, 전기 고정 광도파관(2)의 출구에 설치된 광감지기로 구성된 광결합기 센서.
- 제1항에 있어서, 전기한 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 임의 물체의 표면에 대한 굴곡측정을 위하여 팁(12)을 추가로 형성한 것을 특징으로 하는 광결합기 센서.
- 제1항에 있어서, 전기한 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 가속도 및 만유인력측정을 위하여 고질량의 증착물(13)을 추가로 형성한 것을 특징으로하는 광결합기 센서.
- 제1항에 있어서, 전기한 이동 광도파관(4)의 상부에 온도변화 측정을 위하여 바이메탈(14)를 추가로 형성한 것을 특징으로 하는 광결합기 센서.
- (ⅰ)기판 상에 클래딩층(21)을 형성하고 클래딩층(21) 상에 코어층(22)을 형성하는 과정; (ⅱ)전기한 코어층(22)을 삭각하여 고정 광도파관(2)을 형성하는 과정; (ⅲ)전기항 클래딩층(21) 및 고정 광도파관(2) 상에 지지층(23)을 형성하는 과정; (ⅳ)전기한 지지층(23) 상에 캔틸레버(3) 및 캔틸레버(3)와 연계된 이동 광도파관(4)을 형성하는 과정; 및, (ⅴ)전기한 지지층(23)을 선택적으로 식각하여 캔틸레버 지지판(5)을 형성하는 과정을 포함하는 광결합기 센서의 제조방법.
- 제5항에 있어서, 전기한 지지층(23)으로는 Si를, 캔틸레버(3), 광도파관(2, 4) 및 클래딩층(21)으로는 SiO2를 사용하는 것을 특징으로 하는 광결합기 센서의 제조방법.
- 제5항에 있어서, 전기한 지지층(23)으로는 GaAs를, 캔틸레버(3), 광도파관(2, 4) 및 클래딩층(21)으로는 AlGaAs를 사용하는 것을 특징으로 하는 광결합기 센서의 제조방법.
