Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled formed product of large specific surface area with outstanding adsorptivity, by kneading an organic binder and a treated product prepared by coating activated carbon which has adhered to a specific depolymerizable organic matter with said organic matter, followed by formation and calcination. CONSTITUTION:(a) A depolymerizable organic matter which does not vaporize up to ca. 300 deg.C (e.g., polymethyl methacrylate, polyacrylic ester, nylon) and (b) activated carbon with a size of <=100mu are mixed using e.g. a ball mill to make the component b adhere to the surface of the component a. Thence, the resulting matter and the component a are mixed in a similar way to the above to make the component a adhere to the surface of said activated carbon layer, thus obtaining a treated product with a granular size of <=1mm (A). This component A and (B) an organic binder capable of carbonization by calcination (e.g. PS, PVC, acrylic resin, polyester resin) are then kneaded together with, if needed, (C) stabilizer, solvent, graphite etc., to carry out formation into a desired shape followed by calcination in a nonoxidative atmosphere at 600-900 deg.C to carbonize the component B, thus obtaining the objective activated carbon formed product.
