PURPOSE:To enable the generation of inclined characters such as italics using a font for a base face, by a method wherein a writing-start position register and a select register are made of upper and lower bits of a counter counted in relation to a writing end signal for one line of a character image. CONSTITUTION:A writing-start position of character image data on an image memory is determined by a writing-start position register 21 by every two or more dots forming one set of data. On the other hand, by every aforesaid dot unit a shift amount per line of the character image data in a width direction is determined by a select register 50. In relation to a writing-end signal for one line of the character image, a counter 51 is counted, and the information in the select register 50 forming lower bits of the counter 51 is increased/ decreased. When this value reached a fixed value, the information in the writing- start position register 21 forming upper bits of the counter 51 is increased/ decreased. The character image is inclined by successively changing the information in these registers.
