Abstract

PURPOSE:To separate the covering in the terminal part of an optical fiber unit without deteriorating the strength of the fiber unit by swelling the covering removing part in the terminal part of said unit in the vapor of an org. solvent, scoring the separating point in the covering removing part by a separating blade and pulling the optical fiber unit from the covering removing part. CONSTITUTION:Dichloromethane which is hydrocarbon halide is stored as an org. solvent 3 is a solvent storage part 2 and is warmed to 40 deg.C by a heater which is a heating device 4. The tape-shaped optical fiber unit 11 is held as shown by a dotted line in the figure in a solvent vapor chamber 1 filled with the solvent vapor and after the covering in the covering removing part of the optical fiber unit 11 is swollen, the optical fiber unit 11 is retracted into a covering separating part 5 and is pinched by a clamp 6 for the covering removing part. The separating point of the covering removing part 18 is then scored by the separating blade 8 and thereafter, the optical fiber unit 11 is quickly pulled in an arrow direction, by which the covering removing part 18 is separated from a glass fiber 12.
