Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to effect reversed phase suspension polymerization excellent in safety in the operation and efficient productivity, by dispersing and suspending an aqueous solution containing respectively specified polymerizable monomer components into a hydrophobic organic solvent, and subjecting it to reversed phase polymerization using a polymerization initiator in a specified manner. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing polymerizable monomer components comprising as main components water-soluble unsaturated monomers is dispersed and suspended into a hydrophobic organic solvent which is inert to polymerization, and subjected to reversed phase polymerization using a water-soluble radical polymerization initiator as follows. A monomer and/or polymer (A) is introduced into the aqueous solution while a monomer and/or polymer (B) is introduced into the hydrophobic organic solvent, and the components (A) and (B) are reacted with each other at the interface of the dispersion/suspension and the hydrophobic organic solvent prior to the polymerization of the polymerizable monomer components, thereby forming a film on the surface of a drop of the dispersion/suspension. Said component (A) has two or more functional groups inert to water in the molecule and is soluble in water or the water-soluble unsaturated monomer; and said component (B) has two or more functional groups reactive with the component (A) in the molecule and is soluble in the hydrophobic organic solvent.
