Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the contrast and to enable the liquid crystal display device to be used practically for various displays, optical shutters, controllers, etc., by using a light-absorptive medium. CONSTITUTION:The light-absorptive medium 2 is used as a medium which disperses liquid crystal. Incident light, therefore, passes through the medium 2 in an OFF state while scattered many times by drops 1 of liquid crystal, so the incident light is absorbed in the medium 2 and attenuated, a little light passes through a film, and the incident light is transmitted through the film as it is in an OFF state. In the ON state, the light crosses the film at orthogonally so the passing distance in the absorbing medium 2 is extremely short and the attenuation of the light is small. Thus, the quantity of the transmitted light in the OFF state decreases greatly, so the contrast is improved and this device is usable for various displays, optical shutters, controllers, etc.
