Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic raw material for pharmaceuticals, perfumes, etc., in high yield at a low cost without producing by-product, by using 3,5,5-trimethylcyclohex-3-en-1-one as a raw material and oxidizing with oxygen in the presence of an organic base and a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound is produced by using 3,5,5- trimethylcyclohex-3-en-1-one as a raw material and oxidizing the material with molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen-containing gas in the presence of an organic amine (e.g. dimethylamine) and a manganese complex catalyst of formula (R<1>, R<2> and R<3> are H, 1-4C hydrocarbon group, 1-4C alkoxy, halogen, hydroxy or nitro; R<4> is H or 1-4C hydrocarbon group; n is 2-6; X is halogen, 1-5C acyloxy, azido, thiocyano, etc.) preferably in a solvent (e.g. hexane) at -30-+80 deg.C, especially 0-50 deg.C. The amount of the catalyst is preferably 10<-5>-0.05mol. per 1mol. of the raw material.
