Abstract

PURPOSE: To realize more accurate AC driving to display a picture having a higher quality by cancelling or reducing a DC component due to a drop component of a picture element electrode potential or the variation of the picture element electrode potential due to a leakage current. CONSTITUTION: Counter electrodes b1, b2,...bn are formed apart from one another correspondingly to scanning signal lines a1, a2,...an and are connected to a peripheral circuit 12, and driving signals are applied from peripheral circuits 10 and 11, but a modulation signal is successively applied to individual counter electrodes b1, b2,...bn from the peripheral circuit 12. After a thin film transistor TFT 2 as a switching element is turned off, the modulation signal is successively applied to counter electrodes b1 to bn to bring about a modulation component between the picture element electrode potential and the counter electrode potential, and at least a part or the DC component is removed, or the variation of the picture element electrode potential due to the leakage current is cancelled or reduced. Thus, accurate AC driving of liquid crystal is realized, and a picture having a high quality can be displayed.
