Abstract

PURPOSE:To discriminate a vehicle and to calculate the absolute distance between cars, by confirming the number plate of the preceding vehicle on an image. CONSTITUTION:The CCD camera 2 arranged on a vehicle 1 at a position not obstructing driving and capable of sufficiently securing the front visual field takes the image of the scene on a road inclusive of the preceding vehicle. The obtained image signal is converted to a digital signal by an A/D converter 3 and inputted to a processing apparatus 4 not only to be stored in a memory 6 but also to be displayed on a monitor television 7 as an image. A computer 5 uses the image of the memory 6 to calculate the distance between cars and a distance-between-car meter 8 visibly displays the calculation result. Further, the computer 5 emits an alarm through a means sounding a buzzer at an abnormal approach time when the distance between cars becomes smaller than a predetermined value to pay attention to a driver. At this time, the driver inputs the number plate of the preceding vehicle on an image in an initial state and confirms the number plate of the image taken in at every predetermined time on and after and performs the tracking of the preceding vehicle to detect the distance between cars going in the same direction.
