Abstract
PURPOSE:To electrically insulate the spring member of a spacer and a fuel cladding pipe and to prevent the generation of electrochemical corrosion by interposing a ball consisting of a nonconducting oxide in the contact part between the spring part of the spacer and the cladding pipe of a fuel element. CONSTITUTION:A nuclear fuel assembly is constituted by interposing the ball 1 consisting of the nonconducting oxide to the contact part between the spring member 3 of the spacer and the cladding pipe pipe 4 made of zircalloy in which fuel pellets 5 are housed. For example, a material formed by sintering and molding ZrO2 is used as the nonconducting oxide. The ball 1 is the ZrO2 ball having the smooth surface and has the structure to allow the free rotation thereof within the spherical face of a ball rest 2 and, therefore, not only the outside surface of the cladding pipe 4 is smoothly operated without damaging the surface at all, but also the generation of the electrochemical corrosion is prevented at the time of operating the reactor after the end of assembly.
