Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the working precision of a material to be ground and to improve the resistance of the title drill to chipping and breakage by using a ceramic obtained by adding a specified amt. of Al2O3 to tetragonal ZrO2 as the drill material. CONSTITUTION:The drill is formed from the ceramic obtained by adding 10-50wt.% Al2O3 to the ZrO2 contg. 1-5mol.%, in total, one or two kinds between Y2O3 and Nd2O3. The drill has >=150kg/mm<2> flexual strength, >=about 5MN/m<1.5> breaking toughness, and >=about 1,200 Vickers hardness. The drill is preferably produced by the following process. Namely, the raw powder produced by wet coprecipitation is used, formed at the pressure of >=1ton/cm<2> by CIP (cold hydrostatic press), temporarily sintered at 1,300-1,500 deg.C in an atmospheric furnace, and further sintered at 1,300-1,500 deg.C and >=500atm. pressure by HIP (hot hydrostatic press).
