Abstract

PURPOSE:To readily separate, recover and reuse a catalytic component and selectively obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for medicines and cosmetics in high yield, by using a specific compound capable of exhibiting high catalytic activity and a base as a catalyst and carrying out addition reaction of formaldehyde. CONSTITUTION:Formaldehyde is subjected to addition reaction in a solvent, such as dioxane, while being heated at 50-100 deg.C and stirred using a substance prepared by substituting chloride ions of a quaternary thiazolium salt which is a reaction product of a crosslinked chloromethylpolystyrene with a thiazole compound, such as 5-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-methylthiazole, with cyanide ions and a base, such as triethylamine, in an equimolar amount. The reaction product is then filtered to separate residues consisting of quaternary thiazolium salt particles. The obtained filtrate is subsequently distilled under reduced pressure to distill away the solvent and afford the aimed compound. The filtered residues are directly or, as necessary, washed with an organic solvent, such as methanol, and reused as a catalytic component in the next reaction.
